The role of Bus Operator at CARTA is a full-time, non-exempt position located in Chattanooga, Tennessee, offering competitive hourly pay ranging from $23.35 to $27.47 based on experience and shift assignments. Reporting directly to the Transportation Manager, the Bus Operator plays a crucial role in ensuring safe and efficient operation on assigned fixed routes and shuttle services. This position requires a blend of technical driving skills and superior customer service abilities, as operators are the face of CARTA to the public. Day-to-day responsibilities include adhering to scheduled routes and times, assisting passengers, particularly those with disabilities or special needs, and collecting fares effectively. Operators must maintain constant communication with dispatch and CARTA personnel, operate accessibility equipment properly, and be vigilant in reporting incidents or mechanical issues promptly to ensure safety and minimal service disruption.
This hands-on role demands a high level of responsibility, a commitment to safety standards, and the ability to remain calm and professional under pressure. Operators must be skilled in managing a large vehicle under diverse weather and traffic conditions and possess the interpersonal skills required to engage diplomatically with passengers and coworkers alike. Knowledge of Department of Transportation regulations and possession of a valid commercial driver’s license (minimum Class B with Passenger endorsement) are essential. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- valid commercial driver license (minimum class B) with passenger endorsement
- valid Department of Transportation medical examination card
- ability to operate a large vehicle safely
- strong communication skills

- availability to work full-time in person
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- prior experience in commercial driving, transportation, or customer service is a plus
- commercial driver license (minimum class B) with a passenger endorsement
- maintain a valid Department of Transportation medical examination card
- strong communication and interpersonal skills
- ability to operate a large vehicle safely in varying traffic and weather conditions
- ability to handle stressful situations and provide excellent customer service
- familiarity with two-way radio communication procedures
Job Duties
- Operate a bus over an assigned route while adhering to schedules and safety regulations
- monitor and ensure proper fare collection using the fare box
- answer passenger inquiries regarding routes, schedules, and CARTA services
- assist disabled and elderly passengers with boarding and exiting as needed
- operate wheelchair lifts and ensure securement of wheelchairs when required
- make ADA announcements if the automated system is not functioning
- communicate with CARTA personnel via two-way radio regarding operational concerns
- prepare detailed written reports regarding accidents, incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical issues
- maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with passengers, the public, and fellow employees
