Job Description
The University of Maryland's Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) is a key operational unit within the Division of Administration, dedicated to managing the university's comprehensive parking and transit programs. Serving a vibrant and diverse community of over 50,000 students, faculty, and staff in the Greater College Park area, DOTS prides itself on delivering reliable, efficient, and sustainable transportation solutions. As a self-supporting entity, DOTS plays a crucial role in ensuring the mobility and safety of the university’s population, while also fostering an inclusive and dynamic workforce made up of both student employees and full-time staff.
DOTS’s mission centers on the provision of safe, efficient, sustainable, and forward-thinking transportation services tailored to meet the evolving needs of the University of Maryland community. The department emphasizes strategic planning, continuous education, and high-quality service delivery, making it a leader in campus transportation management. This commitment is reflected in their focus on innovation and responsiveness to community feedback, ensuring that all transit and parking operations support the broader goals of accessibility and environmental responsibility.
The Shuttle-UM Bus Driver position offers an exciting opportunity for an energetic and highly organized individual to join the DOTS team in a vital frontline role. This role involves operating medium and heavy-duty commercial passenger vehicles like cutaway vans and buses ranging from 30 to 40 feet on assigned routes or point-to-point services. The position is focused on providing safe and reliable transportation for students, staff, faculty, and guests, making it vital for maintaining the smooth day-to-day functioning of campus transit.
Reporting to the Transit Operations Manager, the Shuttle-UM Bus Driver will be responsible for conducting necessary pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, maintaining cleanliness, refueling, and securing the vehicles after use. A strong emphasis is placed on passenger safety, courteous service, and adherence to all departmental and regulatory guidelines, including Department of Motor Vehicles regulations and DOTS-specific policies. This role also requires flexibility to work during weekends, early mornings, and night shifts as needed, underscoring the importance of a reliable, service-oriented mindset.
In addition to driving duties, the role involves acting as a representative of the University of Maryland's DOTS by providing exemplary customer service to all riders and maintaining respect for the surrounding campus community. The driver will also participate in meetings, training sessions, and other programs designed to enhance safety and operational effectiveness.
The position pays an hourly rate of $22.79, reflecting its responsibilities and requirements. To qualify, candidates must hold a valid Maryland Commercial Class B driver’s license with a passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions, and have at least one year of driving experience. Applicants should be skilled in navigating buses under various weather and road conditions, possess strong problem-solving abilities, and demonstrate effective communication skills.
Overall, this role provides a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a well-established transportation service team that supports the University of Maryland. It combines technical driving skills with a customer service focus, set within a supportive and mission-driven institutional framework.
