Job Description

Geel Community Services, Inc. is a well-established provider dedicated to supportive housing programs designed to empower individuals and families within safe, nurturing environments. Specializing in single room occupancy and supportive housing, the organization fosters community engagement and offers essential services promoting well-being, recovery, and self-sufficiency. Geel Community Services operates on principles that encourage a coordinated, self-directed, and trauma-informed approach to housing and supportive care, emphasizing tailored services that respect the unique needs of those they serve. Their programs aim to elevate self-worth and facilitate independent living for people with mental illness and co-occurring disorders, ensuring their ability to thrive within their communities.

Located in the vibrant Longwood section of the Bronx, New York, Geel East 162nd Street HDFC, also known as Archie’s Place, is a six-story, fully handicapped accessible building situated within Community Board 2. The building is strategically positioned with easy access to public transportation, including subway lines IRT 2 and 5, as well as bus routes 4, 4A, 6, and 17. This single-site property features 70 studio units and one one-bedroom unit for the Building Superintendent. In addition to residential spaces, the facility provides a multi-purpose room for meetings, recreation, and dining, a small community kitchen, laundry room, and social service staff offices. The first floor houses administrative offices, a conference room, security and reception offices, and outdoor access to a patio, athletic court, and garden. On-site security is maintained 24/7.

The Building Porter position is a full-time role with 35 hours per week, primarily in person, with the standard office hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. However, flexibility is required as duties may occasionally demand earlier starts, later finishes, or weekend work under the direction of the Program Director or Building Superintendent. The hourly wage is $17.00, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package, highlighting the organization’s commitment to employee well-being.

The role of Building Porter is crucial in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of the physical building and grounds. Responsibilities include daily cleaning of common areas such as hallways, community rooms, laundry rooms, and bathrooms, ensuring a healthy, welcoming environment for residents and staff alike. The Porter also manages upkeep of the trash compactor room, replaces trash liners, and monitors the maintenance of all systems. Safety is a priority, requiring immediate reporting of any hazardous conditions or necessary repairs to management.

In the absence of the Building Superintendent, and under proper direction, the Building Porter may also handle compliance with building codes, monitor and maintain fire safety and security systems, and keep detailed records of inspections and maintenance activities. This includes daily checks of lighting and emergency signs, monthly testing of smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors, quarterly fire drills, and managing outside vendor schedules.

Additionally, the Porter oversees boiler room operations, tests water pumps, pressure valves, and hot water heaters, and assists in pest control efforts. Regular inspections of plumbing fixtures, the roof, gutters, and the building’s elevator system ensure continued operational integrity and safety. Routine cleaning and lubrication of elevator components are also part of this comprehensive maintenance role.

Candidates for this position should ideally possess at least a high school diploma or equivalent, with preference given to those bi-lingual in English and Spanish. A minimum of one year’s experience in a similar building porter role is preferred, though individuals with exceptional related experience may be considered. Physically, the role requires the ability to access upper-floor apartments with or without elevator service, perform varied cleaning and maintenance tasks, lift heavy objects, and always utilize proper personal protective equipment for specific duties.

Geel Community Services prides itself on fostering a supportive, inclusive working environment where employees are valued and empowered to contribute to the community’s well-being. Comprehensive job descriptions are available upon interview, and interested applicants are encouraged to apply via the agency’s website career page. This position represents an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking meaningful work in supportive housing with a stable and respected provider.
