Job Description

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a distinguished public research university dedicated to increasing access to quality higher education and advancing discoveries that positively impact the community's health, culture, education, and economy. Recognized as America's leading Hispanic-serving institution, UTEP proudly serves a diverse student body with approximately 84% Hispanic enrollment, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. Situated at a unique geographical location where three states and two countries converge, UTEP offers an expansive array of academic programs with 170 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, making it the only open-access top-tier research university in the nation. The university is committed to realizing its 2030 Strategic Plan, which focuses on maximizing its regional influence and enhancing its national stature by leveraging its core strengths: location, people, culture, and community partnerships.

The Special Facilities Management Department at UTEP, operating under the Office of Special Events, is responsible for the management and maintenance of the university's Special Use Facilities. These include notable venues such as the Don Haskins Center, Sun Bowl Stadium, and Magoffin Auditorium. These multi-purpose venues serve a wide spectrum of users, including Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), university departments, internal and external organizations throughout the El Paso community. The spaces are highly versatile and well-equipped to host a variety of occasions, from meetings and conferences to banquets, graduations, and athletic events.

The Building Operations Coordinator position is central to the smooth and efficient operation of these venues. As a dynamic and detail-oriented leadership role, this position oversees the holistic setup, presentation, and functionality of the facilities during events. Reporting directly to the Building Operations Manager and working on-site in El Paso, Texas, the coordinator manages a part-time team dedicated to Event Operations, as well as coordinating with contracted service providers and vendors to ensure seamless event execution. This full-time, exempt role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, primarily scheduled Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the flexibility to work evenings and weekends when necessary. The annual salary for this position is $40,800.

In this role, the Building Operations Coordinator is tasked with numerous responsibilities that span administrative functions, event operations leadership, and facilities management. Administratively, the coordinator analyzes production methods and equipment performance to recommend improvements that boost efficiency, product quality, and workplace conditions. They approach daily tasks with a strategic and cost-effective mindset, fostering motivation amongst team members through thoughtful planning and problem-solving.

Event operations duties include supervising and developing event operations staff to promote efficiency and execute well-organized events, managing labor for various event setups (such as court installations, stage builds, ADA accommodations, catering setups, and locker room support), and ensuring compliance with venue policies. The coordinator is also responsible for implementing inventory and tracking systems, facilitating safety meetings, and maintaining open communications to streamline operational processes. Essential event tasks such as scheduling, equipment needs coordination, and timely completion of operational activities are key to the role’s success.

Additional responsibilities include overseeing forklift operations and training when necessary, managing NCAA reporting requirements, supporting university special projects, and maintaining thorough oversight of inventory processes. The role demands availability for on-call duties and the ability to work under varying physical conditions, including heavy lifting and outdoor event support.

The university offers a comprehensive benefits package that supports employee health, wellness, and professional development. Benefits include medical, prescription, life insurance options, wellness programs, retirement plans, paid vacation and sick leave, holiday pay, employee discounts, and educational assistance, among others. This role provides an exceptional opportunity for individuals with strong leadership, organizational capabilities, and a passion for facility operations in a vibrant university environment.
