Job Description

Pulaski County General Services is dedicated to providing comprehensive maintenance and operational support across county facilities to ensure a safe, efficient, and welcoming environment for both staff and the public. As a well-established government department, General Services manages a variety of building maintenance tasks, including air conditioning and heating system upkeep, plumbing repairs, electrical system management, and minor construction and carpentry duties. This department typically serves various county offices and public spaces, underscoring the vital role it plays in day-to-day government operations.

The county emphasizes a safe and professional work environment, particularly as some roles within this department are designated as safety-sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Pulaski County prides itself on being an equal opportunity employer, providing a fair and inclusive hiring process for all applicants.

The position of Building Maintenance Technician, within the General Services Department, oversees the reliable and efficient operation of multiple building systems. Classified as non-exempt and eligible for overtime, this full-time role requires a proactive professional capable of managing diverse maintenance challenges. Salary details may be provided during the hiring process, reflecting the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

In this role, the technician is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining heating and air conditioning units, ensuring equipment operates efficiently and safely. Additional responsibilities include monitoring boiler units, repairing electrical and plumbing systems, performing carpentry tasks, and addressing mechanical repairs on gasoline engines such as those found in lawnmowers and tractors. The role also requires maintaining ancillary systems including sprinkler setups and the courthouse clock, highlighting its broad scope.

The technician must be available for on-call maintenance emergencies on a 24-hour basis, demonstrating reliability and a readiness to respond swiftly to urgent issues. Skills in operating specialized tools such as jackhammers and carpentry equipment are essential, along with the ability to read blueprints and written instructions to accurately carry out repairs and maintenance.

This position operates within various county facilities, occasionally requiring travel between sites, and involves physically demanding tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and maintaining a high level of alertness and safety awareness. Communication skills are critical, as the technician also assists in delegating tasks and preparing reports in the supervisor's absence.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED with vocational training in building construction or maintenance and demonstrate substantial experience in building upkeep. They must obtain or already hold a valid Arkansas Driver's License and Boiler Operator's License within specified time frames post-hiring. The county's employment process includes mandatory criminal background checks and physical examinations to ensure fitness for this safety-sensitive role.

Overall, this position is ideal for technically skilled maintenance professionals seeking a stable government role that offers variety, responsibility, and the opportunity to positively impact county operations and public service environments.
