Job Description

Applied Research Laboratories, a prestigious and innovative research facility operating under The University of Texas at Austin, is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and providing cutting-edge solutions to complex challenges. Known for its commitment to excellence, the laboratory specializes in a variety of applied research projects, collaborating with government, academic, and industry partners. Located on the Pickle Research Campus, this institution fosters a dynamic work environment where safety, integrity, and professionalism are paramount. As a part of the university system, the laboratories offer a stable employment environment with competitive benefits and opportunities for professional growth.

The Building Attendant II position is a vital role within the Applied Research Laboratories, responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across multiple facilities including offices, laboratories, and common areas. This full-time role entails a standard weekly schedule of 40 hours, with a mandatory work shift from 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The employee will be engaged primarily in custodial duties such as cleaning, sweeping, mopping, waxing, and polishing floors, as well as dusting and scrubbing stairways, hallways, restrooms, offices, and labs. In addition to routine maintenance, this role involves setup and cleanup after lab events, moving furniture and equipment, and performing other related functions as assigned.

Candidates are expected to work in compliance with stringent safety protocols due to the presence of chemical fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, and restricted areas that require government security clearances. The selected candidate must be a U.S. citizen eligible to undergo a government security investigation for access to classified information. This role demands a high degree of independence, responsibility, and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele while maintaining professionalism.

Salary for this position ranges from $38,480 to $39,000 annually, with possible negotiation based on qualifications. The position is designated as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), ensuring that overtime compensation is provided as applicable. Working conditions require physical endurance to engage in activities such as lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing stairs, continuous standing and walking, and handling cleaning materials daily.

Employees enjoy a comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid basic medical coverage, retirement contributions, paid vacation and sick leave, paid holidays, and access to other valuable employee benefits available through the university's human resources programs. The role provides a unique opportunity to contribute to a leading research institution while supporting the day-to-day operational excellence of the laboratories' physical environment.
