Job Description
The Bronx Zoo, managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society, is one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world and a leading institution dedicated to animal care, conservation, education, and public engagement. Serving millions of visitors annually, the Bronx Zoo combines the joy of wildlife experiences with educational programs and conservation initiatives, making it a landmark destination in New York City. Renowned for its commitment to environmental sustainability and animal welfare, the Bronx Zoo operates various onsite services, including multiple dining facilities that cater to the diverse crowd visiting the zoo throughout the year. The Restaurant Services department is responsible for maintaining high standards of food preparation and customer service in these food outlets, ensuring visitors enjoy a variety of freshly prepared meals in an engaging environment.
The Bronx Zoo Seasonal Prep Cook role is a temporary, hourly position designed to support the kitchen operations during the busy spring, summer, and Holiday of Lights seasons. This role reports to seasonal supervisors, managers, and full-time management staff within the Restaurant Services department. Working predominantly from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with schedule adjustments based on weather fluctuations and guest attendance, this position offers a competitive pay rate of $18 per hour. It requires flexibility, as shifts may shift or extend, particularly during special events such as the Holiday Lights, when extended hours until 11 PM may be necessary. The Prep Cook plays a critical role in preparing and cooking menu items according to established recipes, portion guidelines, and presentation standards to ensure a consistent, high-quality dining experience for all guests.
This position involves setting up and maintaining a clean and organized workstation, ensuring proper ingredient preparation and storage, and adhering strictly to food safety and sanitation protocols. Teamwork is essential as the Prep Cook collaborates closely and respectfully with kitchen staff to coordinate timely meal production and service. Additional responsibilities include assisting with receiving deliveries, stocking inventory, managing freshness, minimizing waste, and adapting to changing kitchen needs by supporting prep work, station changes, and cleaning schedules. The environment is fast-paced and client-driven, demanding professionalism and efficiency. The role also requires an understanding of park attractions and amenities to inform and contribute to superior customer service. Working at the Bronx Zoo not only offers exposure to a dynamic work environment but also an opportunity to be part of an organization committed to conservation and community engagement, making this a unique and rewarding position for culinary professionals seeking seasonal work in a lively and meaningful setting.
