The Breithaupt Career Technical Center Day Trade Teacher position in Culinary Arts represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated instructor to join DPSCD’s CTE department. This full-time role, aligned with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) salary schedule, offers benefits eligibility and reports directly to the Principal. The primary focus of the position is to teach culinary arts skills to high school students, preparing them for successful careers in the culinary industry or further education. This role demands a passionate educator capable of fostering a positive learning environment that emphasizes practical and theoretical knowledge in areas such as production cooking, quantity food preparation, safety and sanitation, and hospitality service techniques.

The ideal candidate must possess valid Michigan teaching credentials in occupational or vocational education or equivalent industry licenses, ensuring that students receive up-to-date instruction that meets state standards. In cases where the certification requirement cannot be met, candidates with a minimum of two years or 4,000 hours of relevant industry experience within the past six years may be considered, potentially via a waiver. Teaching responsibilities include developing and updating curriculum materials based on current industry trends, working closely with advisory committees composed of culinary professionals, as well as ensuring the application of technological tools within the classroom. Instructor duties extend to creating lesson plans, managing student behavior, maintaining accurate records of student progress, and building positive relationships with students, parents, and staff members.

The role also requires continuous professional development to stay current with instructional techniques and emerging technologies relevant to the culinary arts field. Moreover, the teacher must exhibit proficiency in computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as database and internet tools that enhance educational delivery. Job Requirements

  • Michigan Interim Occupation Education Certificate or valid vocational teaching authorization
  • Minimum of two years or 4000 hours of related work experience in the culinary industry if certificate is not held
  • Experience must be within six years of application

Job Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan Interim Occupation Education Certificate, occupation education certificate, or full vocational authorization appropriate for the vocational content of the teaching assignment
  • Valid license(s) if required by the industry
  • Knowledge and expertise of production cooking and quantity food preparation relating to the culinary arts industry
  • Proficiency in safety and sanitation techniques, knife skills, standardized recipe interpretation, basic cooking techniques, portion control, preparation of soups, stocks, and sauces, standardization and quality control, familiarity with the execution of various forms of service
  • Knowledge and expertise with computer equipment operations and software application relating to the industry
  • Knowledge of curriculum, effective instructional techniques, instructional materials and equipment
  • Skills in preparing, implementing lesson plans and instructing students
  • Skills in communicating with students, their parents, administrators, and others
  • Skills in supervising students and managing behavior
  • Technology competency including database, internet, spreadsheet, and related applications
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and accept changes in job duties
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

Job Duties

  • Deliver instruction of the curriculum standards
  • Work closely with an industry advisory committee to stay abreast of the current trends and demands of the workplace
  • Update instructional materials and lessons to include new technological practices and knowledge
  • Build good interpersonal relationships and establish positive rapport with students, parents and colleagues
  • Establish student success as a primary teaching goal and provide opportunities for all students to connect their learning to the real world
  • Seek out and participate in professional learning opportunities
  • Monitor and keep accurate records of student assignments, projects and homework providing the most efficient use of academic learning time
  • Establish a classroom climate that is conducive for learning and reinforce positive behavior and high expectations for all students
  • Provide for the well-being, health and safety of all students
  • Adhere to district policies and respond to feedback by school administration
  • Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as required by the director or his/her designee
