Job Description
The Boston Parks Department is a vibrant municipal organization dedicated to the enrichment and enjoyment of the city's outdoor public spaces. Every year, it organizes a variety of engaging programs and cultural events throughout the numerous parks in Boston. These free, accessible activities are designed to foster community spirit, promote the arts, and encourage active participation by residents of all ages. From performing arts like concerts and puppet shows to participatory arts and crafts workshops and special festivals, the Boston Parks Department aims to make its parks dynamic spaces that contribute positively to the cultural fabric of the city. The department prioritizes community engagement and inclusivity, ensuring that events appeal to diverse audiences and celebrate Boston's rich cultural heritage. It is committed to providing safe, welcoming environments where residents can gather, learn, and enjoy an array of artistic and recreational offerings.
The role of the ParkARTS Assistant is a key position within the Boston Parks Department, responsible for supporting the broad scope of cultural programming that takes place across the city’s parks system. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals passionate about the arts and community engagement to contribute to meaningful programming initiatives like Mayor Wu's Neighborhood Concert Series, movie nights, arts and crafts workshops, and other special summer events. The position encompasses a variety of duties, including logistical support with event set-up and break-down, staffing events to ensure smooth operations, and providing a positive public face for the Parks Department. The role also involves creative contributions such as taking photographs and videos to capture event highlights and assisting with promotional activities including flyer distribution and social media engagement.
Besides operational tasks, the assistant works alongside arts instructors to help teach and inspire youth through artistic activities at various events. Collaboration is essential in this role, requiring interaction with multiple stakeholders such as the Outreach Coordinator, Director of External Affairs and Marketing, and Program Managers to support marketing and outreach efforts. Ideal candidates will be physically active and able to manage event logistics, possess strong communication skills to engage with community members effectively, and demonstrate a team-oriented attitude. Flexibility is important as the role may require weekend and evening work to accommodate event schedules. Creativity, enthusiasm, organizational ability, and adaptability are all qualities that will help the selected candidate succeed in this versatile and rewarding position. Previous experience or interest in arts education and social media promotion is advantageous but not mandatory. Overall, the ParkARTS Assistant position offers a unique chance to be an integral part of Boston's cultural scene while contributing to the vibrant life of its public parks.
