Border Patrol Agent - Entry Level

USBP is actively hiring entry-level Border Patrol Agents (BPAs) on a full-time career basis with grade levels GL-5 through GL-7, providing new hires with competitive starting salaries ranging from $51,632 to $92,912 annually depending on grade level and locality pay. This role offers extensive benefits including health and dental insurance, generous leave programs, participation in the Thrift Savings Plan—a retirement plan similar to a ROTH 401(k)—and eligibility for significant recruitment and retention incentives totaling up to $60,000. Newly appointed BPAs can receive an initial $20,000 recruitment incentive tied to academy graduation and duty station assignments, as well as retention incentives spread over four years.

As a Border Patrol Agent, you will serve as a critical component of national security, assigned to protect borders primarily along the Southwest yet also at other critical mission stations across the United States. Responsibilities involve a range of law enforcement and security activities including detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violating immigration laws, apprehending undocumented immigrants and smugglers, conducting surveillance operations with advanced technology such as infrared scopes, and patrolling diverse environments using various government vehicles including ATVs, horses, boats, and motorcycles.

USBP’s career ladder structure allows progression from GL-5 through increasingly senior grades up to GS-12 based on performance and time in service. Successful candidates will undergo rigorous six-month training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, where they will receive instruction in immigration laws, firearms, defensive tactics, driver training, and Spanish language proficiency to ensure readiness to meet the demands of this public safety role.

Applicants are expected to be U.S. citizens with at least three of the last five years residing primarily in the United States or protectorates, to meet age eligibility requirements (generally under 40 years of age unless exception applies), and to pass a comprehensive selection process including background investigation, physical fitness testing, and entrance exams. Prior experience in law enforcement, military police, public safety, or related fields may enhance candidacy, qualifying some applicants for higher grade entry points.
