The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is a critical agency under the Department of Homeland Security, tasked with protecting America’s borders by preventing illegal immigration, human trafficking, and smuggling of contraband. Agents may be deployed to mission-critical locations across the Southwest and Northern Border sectors where operational needs dictate deployment, and relocation may be necessary. There are also prioritized duty locations that offer additional recruitment incentives of up to $20,000, and retention incentives up to $40,000 available over the first four years to support recruitment and retention in challenging regions.

Job Requirements
- You must be a U.S. citizen
- You must have had primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years
- Candidates must be referred before their 40th birthday unless exempt due to prior federal law enforcement service
- Eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment without age restriction if applicable
- Must successfully complete approximately six months of training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy
- Ability to speak and read both Spanish and English
- Must complete the BPA Entrance Exam
- Ability to relocate as determined by operational needs
- Provide resume and transcripts during the application
- Ability to work full-time as a federal law enforcement officer
Job Qualifications
- One year of general work experience demonstrating decision-making and composure in stressful situations
- Ability to learn regulations, methods, and techniques through training and on-the-job instruction
- Ability to gather concise information through questioning, observation, and examination of documents
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR combination of experience and education
- One year of specialized work experience involving sound judgment in firearms use and courteous law enforcement interactions for GL-7 grade
- Bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education related to law enforcement
- Combined education and experience evaluated through submitted transcripts and resume
- Previous or current law enforcement or military experience may qualify for higher grade levels
Job Duties
- Detect and question people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspect documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations
- Prevent and apprehend undocumented non-citizens and smugglers using surveillance including infrared scopes at night
- Interpret and follow tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry
- Perform farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks
- Patrol international boundaries and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for mission accomplishment
- Maintain composure and exercise sound judgment in stressful law enforcement situations
- Communicate effectively in English and Spanish in the enforcement of laws and coordination with community members and other agencies
