Job Description

The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is a vital federal law enforcement agency committed to safeguarding America's borders and protecting its citizens. As part of the Department of Homeland Security, USBP operates across a wide range of critical border sectors where agents focus on deterring illicit activities such as illegal immigration and smuggling while enhancing national security and economic prosperity. USBP is widely known for its dedicated and highly trained workforce, comprised of over 60,000 professionals who bring a strong sense of purpose, camaraderie, and pride to their important daily mission.

This hiring opportunity describes full-time, entry-level Border Patrol Agent (BPA) positions across several grade levels from GL-5 to GL-7, with opportunities for career advancement up to GS-12 grades through a structured promotion ladder. The positions offer excellent base salaries starting from $51,632 up to $92,912 annually depending on grade and locality pay adjustments, along with a suite of federal benefits including health, dental insurance, generous leave programs, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan—a federally sponsored retirement savings program similar to a Roth 401(k). Additionally, USBP is offering up to $60,000 in recruitment and retention incentives to encourage qualified candidates to join and remain in service.

Border Patrol Agents play a critical role in national security by detecting and questioning individuals suspected of violations of immigration and customs laws, preventing illegal entries at or near the borders, and conducting patrols utilizing a variety of government vehicles and technologies. Agents are rigorously trained at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy located in Artesia, New Mexico, where they undergo approximately six months of intensive instruction in immigration law, law enforcement techniques, firearms use, physical training, vehicle operations, and Spanish language proficiency—the latter being particularly essential given the bi-lingual nature of many border communities.

Duty locations are diverse and strategically situated throughout the United States, with priority given to critical sectors such as Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and other border regions. While candidates may express preferences, final duty assignments are operationally determined and may require relocation. The hiring process involves a comprehensive evaluation including resume review, submission of educational transcripts, successful completion of the BPA Entrance Exam, and ability to meet stringent federal employment requirements such as U.S. citizenship, residency, and age limits.

This position offers a unique and meaningful federal law enforcement career for individuals looking to serve their country while advancing professionally in a dynamic and rewarding environment. Candidates with backgrounds in public safety, security, military police, or other law enforcement fields may find their previous experience valuable and possibly qualify for higher grade levels. With competitive pay, advancement potential, and significant incentives, becoming a Border Patrol Agent is an exceptional career opportunity for motivated individuals seeking to make a lasting difference.
