Job Description
The United States Border Patrol (USBP) is a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security tasked with safeguarding the nation's borders. With a workforce exceeding 60,000 personnel, USBP plays a critical role in protecting the American people by detecting and preventing illegal immigration, human trafficking, and other illicit activities at and near U.S. borders. USBP operates across various sectors and stations, including the Southwest Border and other mission-critical locations, and seeks to hire dedicated individuals who are committed to a long-term career in federal law enforcement.
USBP is currently hiring for full-time, entry-level Border Patrol Agent (BPA) positions at the GL-5 and GL-7 grade levels. This career offers a unique opportunity to serve the country by enforcing immigration and customs laws while contributing to national security. Border Patrol Agents work as part of an elite team characterized by camaraderie, pride, and a shared sense of mission. The agency offers a competitive base salary ranging from $51,632 to $92,912 annually, depending on grade level and locality pay, along with a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and other insurance plans, generous leave programs, and a federal retirement plan comparable to a ROTH 401(k). Additionally, USBP provides significant financial incentives to new hires with up to $60,000 available through recruitment and retention incentives. Newly appointed agents can receive up to $20,000 in recruitment incentives and up to $40,000 in retention incentives spread over their first four years.
This position is a career ladder role with potential advancement opportunities from GL-5 through GS-12 grade levels based on annual performance and tenure. Training for new Border Patrol Agents takes place at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, where agents undergo approximately six months of intensive instruction covering immigration laws, law enforcement techniques, driver and firearms training, physical fitness, and language proficiency, including Spanish. The role requires agents to perform a variety of duties associated with border security, such as patrolling international boundary lines and coastal waters, apprehending undocumented individuals, inspecting documents, conducting surveillance (including night operations using infrared scopes), and interacting with communities in a professional and respectful manner. This career demands a high level of physical fitness, sound judgment, and composure in stressful situations.
Applicants must meet specific requirements including U.S. citizenship, residency criteria, and an age limit that generally requires selection before age 40, with exemptions for veterans and certain federal law enforcement personnel. The application process involves registration with the CBP Talent Network, completing pre-screening assessments, submitting detailed resumes and transcripts, and passing a Border Patrol Agent Entrance Exam. This career represents a profound opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s security and economic prosperity while enjoying the benefits and stability of federal employment.
