Job Description

Baker Engineering and Risk Consultants, Inc. (BakerRisk) is a leading firm dedicated to managing hazards and risks through high-value services, cutting-edge products, and advanced research. Specializing in the protective structures sector, BakerRisk is committed to the evaluation and design of structures subjected to extreme loading conditions such as blasts, thermal effects, and high-velocity impacts. The company operates two state-of-the-art test facilities — the Wilfred E. Baker Test Facility and the Box Canyon Test Facility — where both scaled and full-scale testing of structural designs can be conducted to validate their durability and effectiveness in mitigating risks. This innovative approach has put BakerRisk at the forefront of protective structural engineering, serving a diverse client base ranging from government agencies to private industry sectors with potentially hazardous environments. BakerRisk fosters a collaborative work environment where interdisciplinary coordination is key to developing comprehensive hazard and risk management solutions, particularly synergizing with other technical disciplines such as Process Safety and Blast Effects.

An immediate full-time opportunity is available for an entry-level Blast Resistant Structural Engineer in either the San Antonio or Houston, Texas offices. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career engineers holding a Bachelor’s or preferably a Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering. Successful candidates will be engaged in roles requiring advanced analysis and design of structures composed of steel, concrete, and masonry to withstand severe impulsive loads and other extreme events. The position encompasses a broad range of responsibilities including nonlinear blast response analysis, detailed structural design and conceptual development, preparation of design specifications, support for research and accident investigations, structural drawing creation and review, and validation of numerical calculations. This role requires a fundamental understanding of structural engineering principles complemented by a willingness to learn advanced techniques such as nonlinear design involving various construction materials. Candidates will have the opportunity to apply and expand their expertise in structural dynamics, forensic engineering, and the use of structural analysis software tools. BakerRisk emphasizes a culture of technical excellence and professionalism, expecting all team members to uphold these standards while collaborating closely with project managers on a variety of tasks of limited scope initially, with scope for growth and advancement.

Candidates should expect to travel approximately 25 to 30 percent of their time to support diverse project needs. Communication skills, particularly writing, are essential for effective performance in this role. The company also highly values previous experience or familiarity with structural drawing packages, commercial analysis software such as SAP 2000, finite element modeling tools like LS-DYNA, and Building Information Modeling software such as Revit. BakerRisk offers a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, which includes holiday, vacation, and sick leave pay, medical and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and the potential for a year-end bonus. As an equal opportunity employer, BakerRisk values diversity and inclusion in the workplace and ensures all qualified applicants receive consideration without discrimination.
