The BernCo Clean Community Maintenance Worker position, part of the Operations and Maintenance Department at the 2400 Broadway SE location, is a vital role focused on the upkeep and beautification of public spaces including roadways, medians, sidewalks, trails, and other community areas. This position offers a probationary hourly rate of $18.07 and a union hourly rate of $18.43, reflecting the County's commitment to competitive pay. The role primarily involves manual labor and maintenance work aimed at preserving the safety and aesthetic appeal of rights-of-way and public property.

In this role, the Clean Community Maintenance Worker will engage in a diverse range of landscaping and maintenance tasks such as mowing, trimming, planting, irrigation repairs, and graffiti removal. They will also perform minor surface repairs including concrete patching and painting duties on structures and signage. The worker will be responsible for safely setting up traffic control zones when working near active roadways and may be required to clear snow or ice from pedestrian pathways during inclement weather, contributing to public safety year-round.

Additionally, this role requires effective use of various groundskeeping equipment, power tools, vehicles, and materials essential for landscaping and maintenance operations. The Maintenance Worker must maintain tools and equipment in safe operational condition and accurately document work progress with reports and photographs. The position supports collaborative efforts with other maintenance crews and community beautification programs to enhance the overall environment.

Ideal candidates will have experience with general landscape maintenance, painting, and operation of power and hand tools. Knowledge of irrigation systems, drought-resistant landscaping, and familiarity with low-voltage landscape systems such as telemetry devices and backflow preventers is preferred. A Traffic Control Technician certification is also preferred upon hire or must be obtained within 12 months, aligning with safety standards for working near traffic.

Working conditions for this position are physically demanding, requiring the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and snow. The role involves frequent lifting, walking, climbing, and the use of equipment such as ladders, scaffolding, and power washers. Safety compliance and adherence to County guidelines are paramount, including the use of personal protective equipment and successful clearance of a post-offer medical exam and background check.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed
  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation
  • Adherence to all County safety guidelines
  • Completion of all FEMA training(s) assigned to the position
  • Possess Traffic Control Technician certification within twelve months of hire
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work involving lifting, walking, climbing, stooping, and handling materials
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions including snow, wind, and extreme temperatures
  • Ability to work on various surfaces including uneven ground, inclines, and ladders
  • Ability to work part of a team under supervision and flexible schedules
  • Compliance with County equipment usage and safety protocols

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Assist with a variety of landscape maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, chipping, watering, planting, and repairing drip and sprinkler systems in road medians, trails, and right-of-way areas
  • Support crews with thinning and pruning of trees, shrubs, and flower beds, and assist with weeding and general landscape care
  • Perform basic maintenance and repairs on surfaces such as concrete or plaster including hole patching and crack filling
  • Set up and maintain proper traffic control measures when working along active roadways
  • Remove snow or ice from sidewalks and pedestrian paths as needed
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping and graffiti removal equipment such as sprayers, power tools, vehicles, and trailers
  • Prepare surfaces for painting using techniques such as washing, scraping, sanding, or sand-blasting and mix and apply paints, enamels, stains, and protective coatings
