The Bartender position at Sonesta International Hotels plays a vital role in reinforcing the brand's commitment to delivering excellent customer service and quality experiences. This role involves setting up, servicing, and breaking down the bar area to maintain high levels of quality, consistency, and service throughout every shift. Bartenders at Sonesta are responsible for greeting guests warmly, promoting house drinks effectively, and utilizing upselling strategies to maximize revenue generated by the hotel’s social venues.

In addition to preparing beverages according to established recipes and pouring standards, bartenders coordinate with restaurant staff to provide seamless food service to bar and lounge guests. They monitor guest behavior attentively, ensuring compliance with legal drinking age regulations and intervening where necessary to maintain a safe environment. Bartenders are also tasked with inventory control, securing all liquor supplies, handling cash and credit transactions accurately, and maintaining cleanliness and organization at the bar.

The position demands a combination of technical knowledge and interpersonal skills including knowledge of liquor brands, cocktails, garnishments, and bar operations. Bartenders must be able to carry or lift up to 50 pounds, move efficiently within the bar and kitchen areas, and perform duties requiring bending, stooping, and kneeling. Effective communication is essential, as bartenders interact extensively with guests and team members. This full-time role may require working nights, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.

Job Qualifications

  • Basic reading, writing, and math skills
  • knowledge of liquor brands, beer, wine, champagne, non-alcoholic beverages, designated glassware, preparation methods and garnishments
  • formal bartending training preferred
  • must meet state legal age requirements
  • must speak fluent English
  • alcohol awareness certification and/or food service permit or valid health/food handler card as required by local or state government agency

Job Duties

  • Greet guests as they approach the bar
  • promote house drinks and utilize up-selling skills to maximize revenues
  • prepare beverages requested by customers adhering to established pouring standards and drink recipes
  • coordinate food service with restaurants for bar/lounge guests
  • monitor guest behavior and alcohol consumption
  • check identification when age is questionable
  • alert management of any service and safety issues
  • set up bar including liquor, mixers, ice, garnishes, glassware and supplies
  • perform pre- and post-shift side work such as replenishing snacks and preparing garnishments
  • requisition all necessary supplies
  • inventory unused liquor and beverages
  • ensure all liquor is properly secured before, during, and at close of shift
  • obtain, count and secure bartender's bank
  • receive cash and credit payments
  • give accurate change and balance cash drawer at end of shift
  • wipe down counters, equipment and machinery
  • sweep and mop bar floor
  • promote teamwork and quality service through communication and coordination with other departments
  • perform other duties as assigned
