Job Description
PJ Whelihan's Restaurant + Pub in Bethlehem, PA, is a vibrant neighborhood establishment that prides itself on delivering an exceptional guest experience. Named in honor of the founder's grandfather, PJ Whelihan's has developed a unique atmosphere in each location that fosters a sense of community and loyalty among its patrons. The restaurant features an impressive TV package, making it the ultimate sports destination with a lively bar area that serves a wide variety of beers on tap, including the signature PJW Copper Lager brewed by Victory Brewing Company. The establishment is well known for its famous wings, a beloved treat that has cultivated a devoted customer base and enthusiastic fans throughout the years.
PJ Whelihan's is currently hiring Bartenders who will play a crucial role in enhancing the guest experience by providing friendly, efficient, and expert beverage service. Reporting directly to the General Manager or Front of House Manager, bartenders at PJ Whelihan's are expected to embody several key personality traits that contribute to a successful, engaging workforce. The ideal candidate is friendly, charismatic, and socially confident, with a genuine smile and positive energy that welcomes guests warmly. They take pride in their appearance and maintain a professional demeanor, reflecting well on the brand. Handling pressure in a high-volume environment with calmness and composure is essential, ensuring guests have a smooth, enjoyable experience time and again. Leadership qualities are vital; bartenders must be responsible, confident, and proactive, demonstrating ownership of their duties and a commitment to upholding the restaurant's standards.
In the role, bartenders are expected to greet guests enthusiastically and take beverage orders accurately from both patrons and serving staff. They prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages following standardized recipes to maintain consistency and quality. Proper identification verification for patrons 35 and younger is mandatory to ensure compliance with legal drinking age laws. Bartenders are encouraged to build relationships by learning regular guests' names and preferences, fostering a welcoming atmosphere that encourages repeat visits. Accurate and prompt recording of orders into the register system, handling cash, processing credit card transactions, and making change are critical to smooth operations.
Maintaining cleanliness and organization behind the bar is a crucial responsibility. This includes washing and sterilizing glassware, preparing garnishes, replenishing snacks and appetizers for bar patrons, and presenting drink menus while answering questions knowledgeably. Bartenders must keep bottles and glassware in an attractive and functional setup that supports efficient service and promotes beverage sales. They also handle receiving and serving food orders to guests seated at the bar, monitor and report any equipment or maintenance issues to the manager, and assist with restocking and inventory management. Flexibility is important, as bartenders may be asked to fill in elsewhere in the restaurant to ensure smooth daily operations.
