Job Description
The University of New Mexico (UNM), a renowned public research university located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is seeking passionate and enthusiastic students to join its Valencia Branch as Barista/Cafe Team Members at the LoboCafe. UNM is committed to providing a diverse and inclusive work environment, making it an exceptional place for students eager to gain valuable work experience while completing their studies. The position is classified under student employment with a work-study designation for students who have a work-study award. It is a non-exempt role with an hourly pay rate of $15.00, offering students a great opportunity to earn while they learn in a dynamic campus setting.
The Barista/Cafe Team Member role at LoboCafe is designed as an entry-level position perfect for students looking for a flexible job on campus. This role provides hands-on experience across all facets of cafe operations, including drink preparation, customer service, food handling, and event support. The position fosters teamwork in a fast-paced environment where quality in every interaction and product is a priority. As part of the Valencia Branch, the LoboCafe plays an integral part in campus life, serving great coffee and food while creating a welcoming atmosphere for students, faculty, and visitors.
In this role, team members will develop essential customer service skills by engaging with customers directly, taking orders, and handling transactions efficiently with cash and card payments. The training provided includes a food handler's license at no cost, which equips the team with necessary food safety knowledge to maintain high hygiene and sanitation standards within the cafe. Responsibilities also extend to preparing food items and managing the cafe environment including cleaning, restocking, and following health regulations.
Beyond the daily duties, the Barista/Cafe Team Member will support catering for campus events, assisting with setup and cleanup duties to ensure smooth operations during special functions. The role equips students with practical skills that are transferable to any customer-oriented or food service role, boosting their employability after graduation. The cafe team values friendly, reliable, and communicative individuals who are comfortable working in a high-energy setting and enjoy being part of a supportive team.
This position not only provides a regular income for students but also offers invaluable workplace skills such as multitasking, teamwork, and time management in a real-world environment. The experience gained here is ideal for students considering a future career in hospitality, retail, or customer service sectors, offering them a platform to explore their interests and grow their professional confidence. The University also ensures an equitable hiring process free from discrimination, promoting a welcoming culture encouraging diversity and inclusion at all levels of employment.
