Job Description
Caltech, the California Institute of Technology, is a globally renowned science and engineering institute known for fostering innovation and conducting cutting-edge research. With a commitment to addressing some of the fundamental scientific questions facing humanity, Caltech brings together some of the world’s brightest minds and most advanced tools to achieve breakthroughs that impact a wide range of disciplines. Located in Pasadena, California, Caltech is a hub of intellectual curiosity and technological advancement, attracting diverse talent and fostering a collaborative community where passion for discovery thrives.
The Caltech Dining Services Department (CDS) plays a vital role in supporting this academic and research environment by providing exceptional food service to the campus community. CDS operates four distinctive dining units—Browne Dining Hall, Red Door Marketplace, Broad Café, and Avery Kitchen—serving approximately 2,000 people on campus daily. Additionally, CDS supports over 850 students through its Board Program seven days a week and manages a growing catering operation, making it an essential part of campus life.
Caltech is seeking energetic and adaptable individuals to join their Dining Services team, particularly in roles that require a dynamic, fast-paced work ethic and a positive team spirit. The role involves providing exceptional beverage and food service in a high-volume café or food facility environment, requiring quick service, attention to detail, and flexibility. You will work under the direction of a unit manager with minimal supervision, handling various responsibilities such as preparing espresso and other beverages using commercial-grade equipment, serving food and pastries, bussing tables, restocking supplies, and maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of work stations.
This position demands versatility and the ability to adapt to shifting workloads and locations according to the business needs of the dining units. Employees must be prepared to support multiple service locations and contribute to customer satisfaction with a genuine, friendly attitude. The role is deemed essential reporting, meaning that employees are expected to be prompt and reliable during campus operations, including emergency or high-priority situations.
Working at Caltech Dining Services means becoming part of a dedicated team dedicated to excellence in food service, customer interaction, and maintaining health and safety standards. Candidates should have prior experience in food service or barista roles, strong communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse workplace. A food handler’s certificate or the ability to obtain one by hiring time is required. The key attributes for success include a positive, can-do attitude, teamwork, initiative, and resourcefulness, all essential in a constantly evolving service environment.
This role offers competitive hourly wages ranging from $19.25 to $20.00 per hour, with the final salary dependent on experience, education, and other factors. Caltech provides a comprehensive benefits package to eligible employees that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings plans, generous paid time off, tuition reimbursement, and access to wellness and counseling services. Even employees not eligible for benefits can access some support services such as sick time and onsite counseling.
Caltech is committed to equal employment opportunity and actively works to ensure a supportive and inclusive workplace free from discrimination. Reasonable accommodations are available to applicants and employees with disabilities under state and federal laws. Joining Caltech Dining Services means being part of a forward-thinking, service-focused team that supports a premier educational institution and its vibrant campus life.
