Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain that not only offers a vast collection of books but also serves as a vibrant community hub for readers of all ages. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and dedication to fostering literacy and love for reading, Barnes & Noble places a strong emphasis on creating a memorable customer experience through both its book offerings and café services. As a leader in the bookselling industry, Barnes & Noble provides its employees with opportunities to grow professionally while contributing to a culture of enthusiasm and service excellence. The company values diversity and inclusion, committing to equal employment opportunity and supportive work environments across all its locations. This particular role is based within the café section of a Barnes & Noble store, focusing on delivering high-quality beverage and food service to enhance the customer experience.

The Barista position at Barnes & Noble is a dynamic and integral role within the café team. This position is designed for individuals who enjoy engaging with customers in a lively, community-focused setting while handling various operational tasks that keep the café running smoothly. As a Barista, you will be responsible for greeting customers warmly, answering their questions, and helping them select beverages and café items that suit their tastes and preferences. You will also maintain the cleanliness and visual appeal of the café, ensuring that food displays and dining areas are inviting and well-stocked. Operating registers efficiently and accurately to provide fast and friendly service is a critical component of the position. You will also assist with unpacking deliveries and organizing stock to ensure that all café offerings are fresh and properly displayed.

Barnes & Noble expects its Baristas to demonstrate a strong set of behaviors that reflect reliability, flexibility, and positivity. This includes punctual attendance, readiness to fill scheduling gaps, a hardworking attitude, and a supportive spirit toward colleagues. Patience, friendliness, and a genuine enjoyment of the barista craft are essential characteristics. Training is provided to help you master operational competencies, including using various technologies such as registers and tablets, developing merchandising skills, maintaining hygiene and sanitation standards, and following inventory management practices like First In First Out (FIFO).

The role demands physical activity, including prolonged standing and regular movement around the café. Additionally, Baristas are encouraged to support the broader team by sharing their knowledge of product offerings, promotional activities, and customized customer recommendations. Growth opportunities are available, with the expectation that experienced Baristas will progress to Senior Barista roles where they can take on greater responsibilities and further their career path.

Employment with Barnes & Noble comes with a range of benefits depending on your scheduled weekly hours. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours weekly receive sick pay, an employee discount, and access to an Employee Assistance Program. Those working between 20 and 29.99 hours gain additional benefits such as paid time off after 90 days, company holidays, and a 401(k) plan with company matching. Full-time employees working 30 hours or more are eligible for comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, disability benefits, life insurance, and tuition reimbursement among others. These benefits aim to support the wellness and professional development of employees, reinforcing Barnes & Noble's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment.
