Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a leading bookseller known for its large network of bookstores that serve as vibrant community hubs for readers of all ages. The company is renowned for providing a welcoming environment where customers can explore a wide range of books, magazines, and unique gifts alongside a cozy café experience. Operating across numerous locations, Barnes & Noble merges the joy of reading with premium café offerings, making its stores popular gathering spots for leisurely visits and community events. The organization values diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity employment, ensuring a positive workplace culture that supports the growth and development of its employees. With a strong commitment to customer service excellence and community engagement, Barnes & Noble continues to innovate within the retail bookselling industry while maintaining its core values of accessibility and literary enjoyment.

As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you become an essential part of the bookstore’s café team, playing a critical role in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for customers. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy engaging with others and delivering high-quality customer service in a dynamic retail setting. The Barista is responsible for greeting customers in an upbeat and friendly manner, assisting them with beverage and café product choices, and ensuring a seamless café operation. This role goes beyond just preparing coffee; it involves maintaining the visual appeal and cleanliness of the café area, managing inventory by unpacking and stocking deliveries, and operating registers efficiently to provide prompt service.

The Barista is expected to demonstrate strong "behavioral traits" such as punctuality, flexibility to cover shifts throughout the day including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, positivity in task execution, and a supportive attitude toward colleagues. The role demands excellent teamwork and a genuine enjoyment of the barista craft. Training is provided to develop expertise in using technology like registers, tablets, and computer systems, as well as mastering food and beverage preparation guided by product specifications and recipes.

Physical stamina is important as the role requires prolonged periods of standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking within the store. The Barista supports the bookfloor team as needed and participates actively in store loss prevention strategies by recognizing and addressing theft or disruptive behavior. Advancement opportunities are available, with growth into a Senior Barista role that offers additional challenges and responsibilities.

Barnes & Noble offers a comprehensive benefits package that varies by hours worked, including employee discounts, paid time off, maternity and parental leave, health insurance including medical, dental, and vision, 401(k) with company match, and tuition reimbursement among others. The company fosters a respectful work environment where diversity is embraced, and equal employment opportunity is a fundamental principle. This position is perfect for candidates eager to build their skills in a customer-focused, fast-paced retail environment that celebrates a passion for books and exceptional coffee service.
