Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a leading national bookseller renowned for its expansive selection of books, music, movies, gifts, and its in-store cafes. The company prides itself on being a vibrant community hub and a welcoming destination for readers, learners, and culture enthusiasts. With a commitment to fostering connections through literature and a unique shopping experience, Barnes & Noble stores serve as a gathering place where customers can explore a rich array of products while enjoying the warm ambiance of a classic bookshop environment. As part of its diverse retail presence, Barnes & Noble also operates Cafés within many of its stores, inviting customers to enhance their visits with quality beverages, baked goods, and a comfortable space to relax or work. The company values dedication, reliability, and a positive team spirit, cultivating an atmosphere that supports both customer satisfaction and employee growth.
The Barista role at Barnes & Noble Cafés is a key position within the store's team, integral to delivering an exceptional customer experience and maintaining the smooth operation of the café area. Baristas are the friendly faces welcoming customers, answering their questions, and ensuring they find the perfect beverage or café item to complement their visit. This role requires not only excellent customer service skills but also operational proficiency across multiple tasks. Baristas master the use of technology including registers and tablets, maintain the visual appeal and cleanliness of the café space, assist with inventory and stocking, and prepare food and drinks with precision. They are responsible for helping to unpack deliveries, keep food displays neat, and provide speedy, courteous checkout service. The position involves physical activity such as standing for prolonged periods, bending, lifting, and walking.
A successful Barista at Barnes & Noble demonstrates what the company refers to as “good behaviors” which include reliable and punctual attendance, flexibility with scheduling including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and holidays, and a positive, hardworking attitude. They support their colleagues with kindness and cooperation, maintain cheerfulness in customer interactions, and show enthusiasm for learning new skills and expanding their knowledge of the café products and retail operations. The role offers opportunities for advancement, with experienced Baristas eligible to progress to Senior Barista positions, taking on increased responsibilities and new challenges.
Training is a fundamental part of the role, with Baristas expected to become proficient in various competencies such as operating technology, visual merchandising, food safety, and hygiene practices. They also learn and apply store procedures for loss prevention and customer service de-escalation. As Baristas grow in expertise, they contribute knowledgeably about menu offerings, café promotions, and product presentations to enhance sales and customer satisfaction. They play a vital role in upholding the standards of Barnes & Noble’s hospitality culture, ensuring every customer leaves with a positive impression and a great experience.
The employment type for this position typically ranges from part-time to full-time hours, with benefits packages that scale with hours worked. Benefits may include employee discounts, paid time off, sick pay, maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, retirement plans with company matches, comprehensive healthcare options, and educational assistance. Barnes & Noble is committed to providing a supportive work environment where employees can thrive both personally and professionally while being an important part of a beloved community institution.
