Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a leading bookstore chain, well-known for being a vibrant gathering place for readers and the community. Established with a passion for books, the company fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment where people can explore a vast collection of literature, magazines, and gifts. In addition to its extensive bookselling business, Barnes & Noble has integrated inviting cafes into its stores, enhancing the customer experience by offering a cozy spot to enjoy quality beverages and snacks. These cafes complement the store's mission of connecting people through reading and shared interests, making Barnes & Noble not just a retail space but a cultural hub for book lovers and the surrounding community.

The role of Barista at Barnes & Noble is an integral position within the cafe team, central to enriching the overall customer experience. As a Barista, you will serve as a friendly face and knowledgeable resource for customers visiting the cafe, welcoming them warmly, answering their queries, and consistently going beyond to connect readers with the perfect beverages and cafe offerings. Your role involves maintaining the cafe's attractive presentation, efficiently running the operations, and supporting daily activities like unpacking deliveries and stocking the bakery and dining areas. You will be trained to operate the registers quickly and professionally, ensuring customers receive prompt and courteous service.

Barnes & Noble values specific "behaviors" in its Baristas such as reliable attendance, flexibility with scheduling including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays, a positive work approach, supportiveness, kindness towards colleagues, enthusiasm for the role, and a willingness to learn new skills. Mastery of core operational competencies is expected, including comfort with technology such as registers, computers, and tablets; strong merchandising skills to maintain cafe cleanliness and presentation; running registers effectively; supporting receiving and stocking processes; preparing food and drinks accurately; maintaining sanitation standards; and following inventory best practices like First In First Out (FIFO).

The physical demands of the position include prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and extensive walking. Baristas may be asked to work at different stores to support broader team efforts within the regional cluster. Furthermore, as you gain experience, your expertise in cafe products, promotional items, customization options, and retail sales will deepen, helping you contribute more significantly to the team. Your development will also involve mastering health, safety, and sanitation guidelines to uphold store standards consistently.

Enjoying the Barista role and performing it with commitment can lead to advancement opportunities within Barnes & Noble. Baristas showing mastery of their skills and dedication can progress to the Senior Barista position, where they will face new challenges and opportunities for professional growth. Throughout this career path, compliance with company policies and procedures remains essential.

Employee benefits vary based on scheduled work hours, ranging from basic employee discounts, sick pay, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) for part-time employees to more comprehensive benefits packages including paid time off, maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, 401(k) retirement plans with company match, medical, dental, and vision insurance, spending accounts, disability benefits, life insurance, transit benefits, and tuition reimbursement for those working full-time. These benefits may vary by location and are subject to plan terms and regulatory requirements.
