Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned and beloved bookstore chain that has established itself as a cultural hub and a gathering place for readers and community members alike. Known for its expansive selection of books and welcoming atmosphere, Barnes & Noble also features a vibrant Cafe section where customers can enjoy a variety of freshly prepared beverages and snacks. The company prides itself on creating an inviting environment for book lovers and casual visitors, fostering a sense of community through its combination of retail and cafe experiences. With locations across the country, Barnes & Noble is a key player in the book retail industry and remains dedicated to customer satisfaction and employee development.

The Barista role at Barnes & Noble is an essential position within the Cafe team. Baristas are the frontline ambassadors of the Barnes & Noble Cafe experience, responsible for greeting customers warmly, answering their questions, and expertly preparing and serving a range of beverages and food items. The role demands a friendly and helpful attitude, as well as a commitment to maintaining the attractive presentation and smooth operation of the Cafe. Baristas assist in managing inventory by unpacking and stocking deliveries, tidying the displays and dining area, and operating the register efficiently to provide professional and speedy service.

Baristas at Barnes & Noble are expected to possess strong "behavioral" qualities including reliability, punctuality, flexibility to work varied schedules, a positive and diligent work ethic, kindness and supportiveness towards colleagues, and a genuine enthusiasm for their role. They engage in continuous learning and skills development, becoming proficient in various operational competencies involving technology such as registers and tablets, merchandising, product knowledge, food and drink preparation, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Physical stamina is necessary as the role includes standing for long periods, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking. Baristas may also be called upon to support other stores within the local cluster if needed.

As experience grows, Baristas deepen their knowledge of the full range of cafe products including beverages, bakery items, savory options, and gift items. They play an active role in promoting sales initiatives and new products, offering insightful recommendations to customers. Baristas also contribute to maintaining the cafe’s cleanliness, safety, and hygiene standards by following established procedures and guidelines rigorously.

This position offers clear career advancement opportunities, with a defined path towards becoming a Senior Barista. This next step entails additional responsibilities and the chance to further grow professionally within Barnes & Noble. Employees at all levels are expected to uphold company policies and contribute positively to the store’s team dynamics.

Depending on the number of hours worked, Barnes & Noble provides a tiered benefits package. Part-time employees working fewer than 20 hours receive employee discounts, access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and sick pay. Employees working between 20 to 29.99 hours are eligible for additional benefits such as paid time off including maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, transit benefits, and a 401(k) plan with company match. Those working 30 hours or more enjoy comprehensive benefits including health insurance (medical, dental, and vision), dependent care spending accounts, disability coverage, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and more. Benefit offerings may vary by location and state regulations.

Overall, working as a Barista at Barnes & Noble offers a unique opportunity to be part of a dynamic team within a culturally significant brand. It combines customer interaction, quality food and beverage service, and teamwork within a supportive environment committed to growth and excellence.
