Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a leading bookstore and cafe chain that serves as a vibrant community hub for readers and book lovers. Known for its extensive collection of books spanning numerous genres and interests, Barnes & Noble also enriches the customer experience with cozy and welcoming cafes located within their stores. These cafes provide customers with a comfortable place to enjoy specialty beverages, baked goods, and snacks while they browse or relax. This unique combination of retail bookstore and cafe makes Barnes & Noble a cherished destination for individuals looking to connect over books and quality refreshments. The company is dedicated to fostering an enjoyable environment for its employees and customers alike, emphasizing excellent customer service, teamwork, and a passion for literature and cafe culture.
The role of a Barista at Barnes & Noble is an integral position within the cafe team, requiring a blend of interpersonal skills, operational competencies, and a genuine enthusiasm for the cafe experience. As a Barista, you will be tasked with greeting customers warmly, assisting them in choosing the perfect beverage or snack to complement their visit, and ensuring a smooth, efficient, and enjoyable cafe environment. This role involves more than simply preparing drinks; it entails creating a welcoming atmosphere and launching meaningful customer interactions. You will handle the operational aspects of the cafe, including using various technologies such as registers, computers, and tablets to process transactions smoothly. Maintaining the cleanliness and attractive presentation of the cafe and retail fixtures is essential to ensuring a positive experience for customers. Additionally, you will support inventory management by receiving, unpacking, and stocking deliveries in an organized and timely manner.
Barnes & Noble values "behaviors" that reflect reliability, positivity, flexibility, teamwork, and a love for the barista craft. Successful Baristas demonstrate punctual attendance, fill scheduling gaps as needed, work with energy and purpose, treat coworkers with kindness, and consistently provide cheerful and helpful customer service. The role is physically active, involving prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking, and may require collaboration with other stores within the cluster.
Training and ongoing development are key aspects of this position. Baristas become proficient in technical skills, merchandising, and cafe operations and gradually build expertise in product knowledge, safety guidelines, and customer engagement. As you grow in skill and confidence, you contribute more significantly to the cafe's success and promotional efforts while preparing for advancement to Senior Barista. Benefits are provided according to hours worked, ranging from employee discounts and sick pay to comprehensive health benefits and tuition reimbursement for those working 30 or more hours weekly. Barnes & Noble is committed to supporting its employees through meaningful benefits and a positive work culture.
