Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain that serves as a vibrant gathering place for readers and communities across the United States. Known for its rich selection of books, engaging events, and welcoming atmosphere, Barnes & Noble also features cozy Cafés that offer a variety of beverages and food items to enhance the overall customer experience. Each Barnes & Noble location brings together an enthusiastic team dedicated to promoting literacy, providing exceptional customer service, and creating a warm environment that encourages a love of reading and community connection.

As a Barista at Barnes & Noble, you play a vital role within the Café team, acting as the friendly face that welcomes customers and delivers high-quality service. This role goes beyond just preparing and serving beverages; it involves connecting customers with the right café items, answering their questions, and maintaining an inviting and attractive café environment. The Barista is responsible for handling daily operational tasks such as unpacking deliveries, stocking shelves, tidying display cases, and managing the registers efficiently while providing friendly, professional service.

This position requires dedication to exhibiting positive behaviors such as reliability, punctuality, flexibility with scheduling, and teamwork. Baristas are expected to be helpful, considerate to colleagues, cheerful to customers, and eager to continuously learn new skills. Physical stamina is necessary due to tasks involving prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and constant movement throughout the shift.

Training is provided to ensure the Barista masters all operational competencies, including use of technology like registers and tablets, effective merchandising, preparing food and drinks with accuracy according to recipes, and maintaining café cleanliness and sanitation standards. Baristas follow safety and loss prevention procedures, including de-escalation techniques and theft identification, to help maintain a secure and welcoming store environment.

With experience, Baristas are encouraged to deepen their product knowledge, support sales promotions, and develop expertise in café retail options. The progression pathway leads from Barista to Senior Barista, where increased responsibilities and opportunities for growth are available. Compliance with company policies and a passion for the role are essential for success.

Employment at Barnes & Noble offers various benefits based on weekly scheduled hours. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week receive employee discounts, employee assistance programs, and sick pay. Those working between 20 and 29.99 hours gain additional benefits such as paid time off, including maternity and parental leave, company-paid holidays, transit benefits, and 401(k) plans with company matching. Employees scheduled for 30 hours or more per week receive comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, healthcare and dependent care spending accounts, disability insurance, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, and more. Benefits can vary depending on location and state regulations.

Barnes & Noble is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunity. As an Affirmative Action Employer, they uphold high standards of fairness and non-discrimination across all facets of employment.

Joining Barnes & Noble as a Barista means becoming part of a team dedicated to delivering exceptional café experiences within a beloved literary and community space. This role offers an engaging work environment, career development opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful contribution every day through excellent customer service and teamwork.
