Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a leading bookseller and community gathering place that combines the love of reading with an inviting cafe environment. Known for its vast collection of books, magazines, and educational materials, Barnes & Noble offers a unique in-store experience that engages both book lovers and casual visitors alike. The company prides itself on creating inviting retail spaces where customers can explore, relax, and connect with fellow readers. Established as a prominent figure in the bookselling industry, Barnes & Noble continues to adapt and thrive by integrating a full-service cafe into its stores, offering customers a cozy spot to enjoy freshly brewed beverages and delicious snacks.\n\nThe company is currently seeking enthusiastic and customer-focused Baristas to join their cafe teams in Barnes & Noble bookstores. This role is pivotal to ensuring the smooth operation of the cafe while enhancing the overall customer experience. Baristas at Barnes & Noble are more than just coffee makers; they are ambassadors of the cafe’s warm and welcoming atmosphere. The position involves greeting customers with cheerfulness and professionalism, answering queries about menu items, and expertly crafting beverages and food items to meet customer preferences. Baristas also contribute to maintaining the cleanliness and attractive presentation of the cafe space, managing inventory by unpacking and stocking deliveries, and operating registers efficiently to provide prompt and courteous service.\n\nBarnes & Noble emphasizes certain behavioral standards for its Baristas, which include maintaining reliable attendance, demonstrating flexibility in scheduling across early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays, and approaching work tasks with energy and a positive attitude. Team support and customer interaction are critical aspects of this role, where kindness, helpfulness, and a willingness to learn new skills stand out as essential qualities. The company offers thorough training for new Baristas, covering operational skills such as handling technology like registers and tablets, developing merchandising expertise to keep product displays orderly and appealing, and mastering food and beverage preparation.\n\nThe role also demands physical stamina, given the nature of the work involving prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking. Baristas may sometimes be asked to assist at different store locations within a cluster, fostering a supportive network among Barnes & Noble stores. With experience, Baristas can expect to deepen their product knowledge related to the cafe’s beverage, bakery, and savory offerings as well as retail items. They will learn to make informed food and beverage customization recommendations, support key promotions, and help maintain hygiene and safety standards in the cafe.\n\nCareer advancement is encouraged, with Baristas having the opportunity to progress to Senior Barista roles, taking on additional responsibilities and growing professionally within the company's career path. This position ensures a dynamic, collaborative work environment where team members are valued and supported. Barnes & Noble also maintains a strong commitment to diversity, equal opportunity, and compliance with all employment laws, providing reasonable accommodations to candidates as needed.\n\nEmployment benefits vary based on the number of hours worked weekly, offering inclusive packages such as employee discounts, paid time off, maternity and parental leave, company holidays, health insurance, 401(k) plans with company matches, and tuition reimbursement among others. These benefits reflect Barnes & Noble's dedication to the well-being and growth of its workforce, making it an attractive employer for individuals passionate about books, customer service, and cafe culture.
