Job Description

Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain that serves as a vibrant community hub for readers and book enthusiasts across the United States. Known for its extensive collection of books, magazines, and related products, Barnes & Noble also features inviting cafes where customers can relax, enjoy their favorite beverages, and connect with others. The company values creating an enriching environment for customers and employees alike, fostering a culture centered on customer service, community engagement, and a passion for books and coffee. As a prominent retailer in the bookselling industry, Barnes & Noble combines traditional bookstore values with the convenience of a modern cafe setting to provide a unique experience to every visitor.

At Barnes & Noble, the Barista plays a crucial role as a welcoming face and helpful resource at the heart of the bookstore’s cafe. This is a customer-facing position that requires not only skill in preparing coffee and other beverages but also a warm and engaging approach to service. Baristas are responsible for greeting customers cheerfully, assisting them with their questions, and helping each person find the perfect beverage or cafe item to complement their visit. Beyond serving coffee, the Barista is an integral team member supporting the overall operation and presentation of the cafe, including tasks like unpacking deliveries, stocking shelves, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring the cafe remains an inviting space.

This role demands dedication, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn new skills related to cafe operations. Baristas at Barnes & Noble must be proficient in using various technologies, including registers, tablets, and inventory systems, to ensure efficient service. Strong merchandising abilities are important to keep the cafe appealing and organized, while operational competencies like preparing drinks accurately, managing food safety protocols, and executing cleaning tasks ensure smooth daily functioning. The position also involves physical activity such as standing for prolonged periods, lifting, and walking, reflecting the dynamic nature of the cafe environment.

Barnes & Noble promotes a culture of high standards and mutual support among its employees. Baristas are expected to demonstrate reliability, positivity, team spirit, and a commitment to exceptional customer service. They must be flexible to adapt to varied shift schedules, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays. With experience, Baristas gain deeper knowledge of cafe products and services, enabling them to provide expert recommendations and contribute to sales initiatives and promotions. Career growth is encouraged, with progression opportunities toward Senior Barista roles, offering new challenges and development paths.

Employees scheduled for fewer than 20 hours per week receive benefits such as Employee Discount, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and Sick Pay, while those working more hours are eligible for expanded benefits including Paid Time Off, Paid Maternity and Parental Leave, Company Paid Holidays, 401(k) with Company Match, Health Benefits, and Tuition Reimbursement. The company is committed to supporting its workforce with competitive compensation along with benefits tailored to part-time and full-time schedules, promoting a rewarding work environment within the bookstore and cafe setting.
