Job Description
Barnes & Noble is a renowned bookstore chain and community hub that brings together readers and book lovers in a welcoming environment. Known for its vast selection of books, magazines, and unique gifts, each Barnes & Noble store also features a cafe where customers can relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, and indulge in tasty snacks. This combination of an educational and leisure destination makes Barnes & Noble a cherished venue in many communities. With a focus on great customer experiences, Barnes & Noble continuously seeks dedicated team members who share a passion for literature and high-quality service. The company prides itself on creating a friendly atmosphere that fosters connection and discovery, making every visit to the store a memorable one.
The Barista role at Barnes & Noble is crucial to the success of the cafe experience within each store. As a Barista, you serve as an integral member of the cafe team, welcoming customers with cheerful and helpful service. Your responsibilities range from greeting customers warmly, answering their questions about beverage options, to helping them select the perfect drink or food item. You contribute to maintaining the overall presentation and cleanliness of the cafe, ensuring that it is an inviting space for all guests. In this role, you will operate registers efficiently and professionally to provide swift service that enhances customer satisfaction.
Within this dynamic and sometimes fast-paced environment, the Barista is expected to master operational competencies, including the use of registers and technology such as computers and tablets. You will also develop merchandising skills to keep the cafe and retail counters looking attractive and well-stocked. Your role involves unpacking deliveries, stocking inventory accurately, preparing food and beverages to quality standards, and performing daily cleaning to maintain hygiene. You are expected to adhere to First In First Out (FIFO) practices for product management and support loss prevention and de-escalation efforts as necessary.
This position requires physical stamina with prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and walking as routine parts of the workday. Flexibility is valuable, as Baristas may be asked to assist in other stores within the regional cluster. The company emphasizes ongoing learning and skill development, encouraging Baristas to deepen their product knowledge—from beverages to bakery items and gift merchandise—and to contribute to promotional efforts.
Barnes & Noble fosters a supportive work culture where positive behaviors such as reliability, punctuality, teamwork, kindness, and enthusiasm are highly valued. The company expects employees to maintain high standards and exhibit a genuine passion for being a Barista. Career growth is supported, with experienced Baristas moving toward senior roles that offer greater responsibility and opportunity.
Employment benefits vary depending on hours worked, ranging from employee discounts and sick pay for part-time employees to comprehensive health insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan options for full-time staff. Barnes & Noble is committed to providing an inclusive workplace where employees feel valued and inspired to deliver exceptional service to the community.
