The Barista role at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is a vital position responsible for ensuring that the Starbucks experience is delivered with excellence to customers. This part-time role operates Monday through Friday from 11:15 am to 5:45 pm, focused on providing prompt service, quality beverages, and maintaining a clean and safe environment to meet and surpass service standards. The Barista maintains high standards through adherence to Clean, Safe, and Ready practices and is entrusted with tasks such as operating the cash register, managing pantry duties, and delivering a seamless food service experience.
Working as a Barista involves day-to-day activities that require minimal supervision while ensuring accuracy and quality in service. Responsibilities include utilizing and managing the computerized inventory control system of the Food Service department, understanding dietary needs including allergens and special meal preparations, and adhering to regulatory cleanliness and sanitation standards, including strict compliance with Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines. The role also demands staying informed on industry trends, addressing and escalating customer complaints when necessary, and completing all required trainings such as those on seasonal beverages, promotions, and annual competencies.
This position requires physical stamina and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment. Baristas must demonstrate adaptability, excellent problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to customer service, ensuring a positive and consistent experience for every visitor. The job also involves frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds, alongside the capability to work around varying noise levels and temperature changes inherent to the work environment.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience or bachelor’s degree
- Barista Certification obtained within six weeks of employment
- ServSafe Food Handler Training Certificate within 30 days of hire
- Ability to perform physical tasks including standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment
- Compliance with all applicable safety and health regulations
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience with a high school diploma
- No prior experience required with a bachelor’s degree
- Some direct hospital experience preferred
- Experience in hospitality service environment preferred
- Good understanding of safety and sanitary requirements preferred
- Barista Certification required within six weeks of employment
- ServSafe Food Handler Training Certificate or equivalent required within 30 days of hire
Job Duties
- Perform and manage day-to-day activities related to own area such as operating cash register and pantry duties
- Utilize and update the Food Service department computerized inventory control management system
- Resolve queries and provide support through prompt response and courteous service
- Understand and track dietary needs, allergens, and special meal preparations
- Maintain and follow regulatory standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and freedom from hazards and infections
- Follow Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines when handling food
- Escalate all customer comments and complaints to the appropriate leaders
