Job Description

Joe Coffee Company, established in 2003 by Jonathan Rubinstein, is a leading specialty coffee company with deep roots in New York City. Beginning as a single specialty coffee shop in Manhattan's West Village with the vision to brew exceptional coffee and create a welcoming community space, Joe Coffee has evolved into an influential player in the coffee industry. Today, the company operates 23 cafes across New York and its own roastery in Long Island City. Joe Coffee is renowned for its dedication to quality, hospitality, and education, reflecting a pioneering spirit in the artisan coffee movement. They are committed to providing an exceptional coffee experience that values the barista's role just as much as the coffee itself. This commitment is reflected in their investment in industry-leading training and the long-term development of their team.

The role of Barista in Training (BIT) at Joe Coffee Company Columbia Northwest Corner location represents an incredible opportunity for individuals interested in specialty coffee and aspiring to grow into certified Joe Coffee baristas. This position offers an hourly wage of $17 plus tips, emphasizing the value Joe Coffee places on its team members. The BIT role is designed for curious and committed candidates passionate about coffee and delivering warm, thoughtful customer service. Ideal candidates are motivated, reliable, friendly, fast-paced, and thrive in a collaborative team environment.

As a Barista in Training, you will support the daily cafe operations while acquiring foundational skills essential for becoming a certified Joe Coffee barista. Your responsibilities will include delivering welcoming, inclusive, and attentive customer service that aligns with Joe Coffee's hospitality standards. You will also accurately operate the point of sale system, handling order entry, cash handling, and payment processing. The role involves preparing non-espresso beverages and food items such as drip coffee, cold brew, tea, matcha, and seasonal drinks according to the company's recipes and quality standards. Maintaining café cleanliness, organization, and food safety standards is also a critical part of this role.

Beyond operational duties, the Barista in Training position actively encourages participation in training, coaching, and receiving constructive feedback. This hands-on learning approach prepares BITs for full barista certification and helps hone their craft for a long-term career within Joe Coffee. This position not only develops technical barista skills but also fosters deep knowledge of coffee culture and community engagement through various company programs and events.

Joe Coffee Company takes pride in offering a comprehensive benefits package designed to support employees' well-being, growth, and happiness. Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance after six months of employment; beyond med access for elective procedures; pre-tax commuter benefits; and an employee assistance program offering confidential mental health, legal, financial, and personal support. Financial benefits include a 401(k) retirement plan with employer matching and various bonuses and incentives like employee referral bonuses, permit renewals, team-based recognition programs, and festivities such as the Halloween Costume Contest.

Further growth and development are encouraged through in-depth barista training, paid continuing education, mentorship programs, and origin trips to learn about coffee at its source. Joe Coffee also fosters a vibrant community and culture with signature events like The Joe Show, holiday celebrations, and latte art throwdowns that enhance team spirit and collaboration.

Joe Coffee Company embraces diversity and is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer, committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and providing reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. This role is ideally suited for those with prior coffee shop or customer service experience who are flexible and excited to join a dynamic and supportive team.
