Job Description

Joe Coffee Company is a well-established specialty coffee company founded in 2003 by Jonathan Rubinstein, beginning as a single specialty coffee shop located in Manhattan's West Village. With a mission to brew exceptional coffee and create a welcoming community space, Joe Coffee has expanded significantly to operate 23 cafes throughout New York and a dedicated Roastery in Long Island City. The company is deeply committed to quality, hospitality, and education, famously investing in industry-leading training programs and focusing on the long-term success of its team. Joe Coffee remains a pioneer and leader within the evolving specialty coffee movement, continuously innovating and growing while maintaining high standards in every aspect of its operations.

The Barista in Training (BIT) role at Joe Coffee is an entry-level position designed for individuals who are curious and eager to learn about specialty coffee and want to advance their skills to become fully certified Joe Coffee baristas. Located specifically at the Columbia Business School cafe, this role offers hourly compensation at $17 per hour plus tips and provides an excellent opportunity for those passionate about coffee and exceptional customer service. As a key team member, Baristas in Training play an essential part in supporting daily cafe operations, delivering thoughtful and warm customer interactions that embody Joe Coffee’s hospitality standards.

This role suits motivated, reliable, and friendly candidates who thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and have a desire to build foundational barista skills. Training includes hands-on learning with opportunities for mentorship and continuing education, empowering BITs to grow professionally and personally within the company. They are trained to handle the point of sale system, prepare a variety of non-espresso beverages such as drip coffee, cold brew, tea, matcha, and seasonal drinks, and ensure that cafe cleanliness and food safety protocols are met consistently.

Joe Coffee is committed to the well-being, growth, and happiness of its employees, offering a comprehensive benefits package that covers health and wellness benefits, including medical, dental, and vision insurance after six months, beyond medical elective procedure access, pre-tax commuter benefits, and a confidential Employee Assistance Program. Financial support through a 401(k) retirement plan with company match and multiple incentives, bonuses, and team recognition programs underscore the company's dedication to rewarding hard work.

Furthermore, Joe Coffee fosters growth by providing extensive barista training, paid continuing education, personalized mentorship programs, and unique origin trips to coffee sources. Team culture is enriched through community-building events, holiday celebrations, and engaging competitions like latte art throwdowns. Additional perks have included subsidized Citi Bike or Lyft Pink memberships and free financial literacy workshops. As an Equal Employment Opportunity employer, Joe Coffee Company celebrates diversity and promotes an inclusive workplace where everyone is treated fairly and respectfully, offering accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.

In summary, the Barista in Training position at Joe Coffee presents an exciting career entry point for enthusiastic individuals wanting to become part of a vibrant coffee community, develop valuable skills, and contribute to an industry-leading company dedicated to quality and team member success.
