Job Description

Surety Hotel, nestled in the historic Hippee Building in downtown Des Moines, is a distinguished member of Marriott's Autograph Collection. This beautifully restored 1913 Beaux-Arts landmark combines the charm and character of the city's rich past with modern world-class hospitality. Boasting 137 guest rooms and suites, alongside lively gathering spaces and onsite dining at Mulberry Street Tavern, Surety Hotel stands as both a beloved local landmark and a premier destination for travelers seeking unique and high-quality hospitality experiences.

As part of Aparium Hotel Group, Surety Hotel represents a commitment to excellence, connection, and community. The hotel's name and ethos stem from the concept of a surety bond, symbolizing a promise of exceptional service, innovative design, and a hospitality experience that is rooted in authenticity and warmth. The environment here is fostered to create meaningful connections with guests and to deliver hospitality that feels personal and genuine. This dedication has cemented Surety Hotel's reputation as a point of pride not only for Des Moines but also for the larger Marriott Autograph Collection network.

The role of the barista at Surety Hotel is vital to upholding this promise of great service. Reporting directly to the Food & Beverage Manager, this full-time position is non-exempt and operates within a dynamic and collaborative team environment including servers, bartenders, cooks, and chefs. The barista will be the cornerstone of memorable guest start-of-day experiences, specializing in crafting excellent coffee and tea beverages with precision and care. This role demands a heart for hospitality, exceptional attention to detail, and a passion for sharing knowledge about the art of coffee and tea-making.

A successful barista at Surety Hotel thrives in the fast-paced, sometimes high-pressure environment typical of a vibrant hospitality setting. They represent the Aparium difference by being attentive, courteous, and efficient at all times. The role requires punctuality, professionalism, and the readiness to support fellow team members, emphasizing a culture of collaboration, respect, and enthusiasm. The barista is expected not only to serve quality beverages but also to inspire confidence and create positive guest interactions that resonate well beyond the first sip.

Daily responsibilities include adhering to the company values centered around People, Place, and Character, ensuring consistency in beverage preparation by following accurate recipes and measurements, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. The barista will manage cash handling with accuracy, engage guests with product knowledge to enhance their visit, and contribute actively in team meetings to strategize improvements and celebrate successes. Effective communication across team members—from chefs to servers—is essential to delivering timely and exceptional service.

Surety Hotel and Aparium Hotel Group pride themselves on fostering a workplace that values diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The organization encourages a culture free of egos, one where humility and open-mindedness are championed. This role offers a chance to grow professionally within a reputed hospitality group while making an impact in a historic yet forward-looking hotel environment.
