Job Description
UW Medicine-Montlake Food and Nutrition is a crucial part of the University of Washington Medical Center, located in Seattle, Washington. The Medical Center is a nationally recognized acute care academic medical center with two main campuses: Montlake and Northwest. It has been consistently ranked as the top hospital in Seattle and Washington State since 2012 by U.S. News & World Report. The Montlake campus sits adjacent to the beautiful University of Washington main campus, providing employees with convenient amenities and excellent public transit options including Sound Transit's light rail station just across the street. UW Medicine is Washington's only health system that not only provides outstanding primary and specialty care but also includes a top-rated medical school and an internationally recognized research center. The system's mission emphasizes improving public health through innovative research, comprehensive healthcare, and training of tomorrow's leading medical professionals. UW Medicine employs nearly 29,000 healthcare professionals, educators, and researchers across several hospitals and affiliated centers, all collaborating to uphold the values of excellence, exploration, and education while fostering respectful and inclusive environments.
The Barista (Food Service Worker 2) position within the Nutrition and Food Services department plays a vital role in supporting UWMC's mission by delivering compassionate, evidence-based care and exceptional customer service within the hospital setting. This full-time role, with an FTE of 100 percent (40 hours per week), offers multiple scheduling patterns including night shifts (Sunday-Thursday 8pm-4:30am), afternoon/evening shifts (Monday-Friday or Sunday-Wednesday 2pm-10:30pm, potentially with some morning shifts), and day shifts. The department focuses on providing fresh and nutritious food to patients, families, and the community, creating an empowering work environment for employees, and improving quality of life through excellent food service. As a Barista, you will independently operate a remote food service area or espresso bar, prepare and serve a variety of espresso beverages and food items, and ensure the area is clean and well-stocked. The position requires excellent customer service skills tailored to a diverse customer base in a medical environment. You will also be responsible for operating espresso and food service equipment, handling cash and electronic payments according to departmental policy, and training new or less experienced employees in standard procedures. This role is not only about beverage preparation but also about creating a positive experience for hospital patients, visitors, and staff through friendly and professional service. The hourly pay range is between $21.70 and $24.97, and the position is a regular, full-time role within the WFSE Campuswide union bargaining unit. Working here offers exceptional benefits and opportunities for professional growth at one of the nation’s premier health systems with a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
