Job Description

Compass Group is a leading global foodservice and support services company known for delivering high-quality food experiences and exceptional service across a variety of sectors including education, healthcare, business, and leisure. Within the educational sector, Compass Group operates Chartwells Higher Ed, a division that specializes in providing dining services to college and university campuses, ensuring students and faculty receive nutritious and delicious meal options in a welcoming environment. The company prioritizes a culture of respect, inclusivity, and empowerment, aiming to create meaningful impact and foster growth and development for its associates. The position available is located at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, one of the premier institutions in Alaska, known for its commitment to education and research excellence. Situated at 1731 S Chandalar in Fairbanks, AK, this role offers an opportunity to be part of a team that plays an integral role in supporting the campus community through food and beverage service.

This job opening is for both full-time and part-time Barista positions, with schedules from Monday to Friday, 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, providing flexible employment options to fit different lifestyles and needs. Applicants are invited to apply online and will find the process straightforward and easy. The pay range for this position is competitive, ranging between $19.00 and $20.00 per hour, reflecting the company’s commitment to rewarding its employees fairly. The role focuses on the preparation and serving of high-quality coffee and espresso beverages along with related food and beverage items. Baristas will follow strict HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) guidelines to ensure food safety and quality standards are consistently maintained.

Responsibilities include preparing espresso orders accurately using standard recipes, handling cash and card payments efficiently using POS devices, maintaining cleanliness of all equipment and work areas, and engaging with customers in a friendly and professional manner. The role demands attention to presentation, portion control, and serving temperatures to guarantee an excellent customer experience. Beyond these technical skills, the position also values interpersonal skills that foster customer satisfaction and support team communication. Successful Baristas will be advocates of the company’s selling techniques, helping customers make informed purchasing decisions, and ensuring that all food displays are attractive and welcoming.

Employees joining Compass Group benefit from a supportive work culture dedicated to training and personal development, offering numerous advantages beyond just the hourly wage. Benefits for both full- and part-time associates include retirement plans, health and wellness programs, associate shopping programs, identity theft protection, and voluntary insurance benefits such as critical illness and accident insurance. Full-time employees enjoy additional perks including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, as well as disability insurance and commuter benefits. The company also provides employee assistance programs, flexible spending accounts, and opportunities for paid or unpaid time off depending on applicable laws and employment status.

Working at Compass Group means becoming part of a diverse and inclusive workplace that values fairness and equal opportunity. The company is committed to treating all individuals equitably, regardless of race, gender, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status. As this position takes place within an educational facility, employees may experience seasonal variations in work requirements, including potential temporary layoffs during campus breaks such as winter and summer. However, based on business needs, some associates may be required to work year-round and possibly at different locations during these periods.

Overall, this Barista role at the University of Alaska Fairbanks with Compass Group is ideal for motivated individuals who have previous experience in barista duties, cash handling, and customer service, and who are looking to contribute to a vibrant campus community while gaining competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits.
