Job Description

The Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department is a nationally accredited and highly recognized organization, having been honored four times with the National Gold Medal Award for Parks and Recreation Excellence. This department is committed to enhancing the city’s existing parks and recreational assets, expanding program offerings through robust partnerships, and creating transformational recreational programs that connect communities with a vibrant, healthy, and equitable park system. The department is a cornerstone of community wellness and quality of life in Greensboro, consistently seeking talented and enthusiastic individuals who share a passion for public service and a strong work ethic to help make a difference throughout the city.

The current employment opportunity is for roster positions within the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department. Roster positions offer hourly employment without benefits such as medical, dental, or vision insurance, life insurance, paid leave, or paid holidays. These roles limit work hours to no more than 1,000 hours within any 12-month period and are not eligible for the city pension system. Despite these limitations, roster positions provide valuable experience and often serve as gateways to full-time employment opportunities with benefits within the city. Many full-time employees at Greensboro Parks and Recreation started their careers in roster roles, highlighting the importance of these positions as entry points for career growth and community contribution.

In this role, employees will oversee facilities and events, making sound operational and personnel decisions based on established guidelines. They will be responsible for delivering excellent customer service and maintaining professional communication both in person and over the phone. Thorough knowledge of all relevant rules, policies, and procedures is expected. Preparation of facilities for events and rentals, including setup, teardown, and custodial tasks, will be part of the daily responsibilities.

Employees will attend to customer needs before, during, and after events, act as liaisons between department staff and event guests, and maintain regular communication with supervisors while responding promptly to work-related requests. Participation in staff meetings and trainings is required, along with assisting in coverage for other duties, facilities, programs, and events within Barber Park or Gateway Gardens. Other department activities and programs may also require support as needed, and employees will perform additional duties as assigned.

Work schedules will vary according to facility needs, with daily utilization possible from Sunday through Saturday. Shifts can range from early morning hours starting at 7 am to late-night hours up to 1 am. The position is physically demanding with frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces. Regular heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is necessary, including moving tables, chairs, and other event materials.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy dynamic, hands-on work environments, have a passion for community service, and are looking to gain meaningful experience in parks and recreation event management and facility operations. It presents an excellent opportunity to build a career in public service and contribute positively to the quality of life in Greensboro through parks and recreational programming.
