Job Description
Umami Riot is a vibrant and innovative hospitality group founded by Chef Tim Cushman and sake expert Nancy Cushman. The group epitomizes the fusion of joyful hospitality with uncompromising craftsmanship, highlighting bold flavors, precision, and a profound respect for traditional Japanese foodways, all interpreted through a contemporary Boston lens. This dedication to exceptional culinary experiences and warm hospitality distinguishes Umami Riot as a leader in the restaurant industry in Boston and beyond. As a company, Umami Riot values creativity and fearless innovation, aiming to rewrite the conventional rules of hospitality through every one of their establishments.
At the heart of Umami Riot lies Hojoko, a lively Japanese-inspired tavern symbolizing the group's ethos. This venue reflects a high-energy atmosphere where loud music, great company, and seriously good food come together to create memorable dining experiences. Hojoko perfectly blends high-end culinary techniques with an approachable, fun environment. Mouthwatering dishes such as wagyu cheeseburgers and spicy ramen are served alongside sake bombs, crafted with the same meticulous attention and care as a fine dining restaurant. The focus at Hojoko is on delivering bold flavor and genuine enjoyment, making it a hotspot for locals and visitors seeking an adventurous yet casual dining experience.
The Barback position at Umami Riot is a crucial role within the fast-paced environment of Hojoko. This role requires a highly energetic and reliable person who thrives in a dynamic setting and possesses a keen sense of anticipation and organization. The barback serves as the backbone of the bar service, ensuring that everything behind the scenes runs smoothly to support the bartenders and maintain a stress-free service from start to finish. The barback is responsible for constant preparation, keeping the bar fully stocked, and maintaining the impeccable cleanliness of the service area, all while staying quietly ahead of the night’s demands.
This role is ideally suited for someone who moves fast and thinks even faster—an individual who excels at staying organized amid chaos and finds satisfaction when busy and relied upon. The barback must be committed to safety, sanitation, and operational excellence, ensuring that no shortcuts are ever taken. This position requires a high-energy presence for every shift, including nights, weekends, and holidays, delivering top-notch service with hustle and integrity.
With competitive pay starting at $6.75 per hour plus tips, this job offers not only the opportunity to work with a dedicated team rooted in creativity and heart but also the chance for real growth within the company. Employees enjoy dining discounts at all Umami Riot locations and benefit from a respectful, inclusive team culture. For those who want to engage in a hands-on role that prioritizes both craft and hospitality, the Barback position at Umami Riot represents an excellent career opportunity with room to develop and thrive.
