Job Description

Black Sheep DSM is a renowned specialty cocktail lounge located in the vibrant East Village neighborhood of Des Moines, Iowa. Established in 2016, this independently owned and operated establishment has cultivated a unique and distinguished reputation in the local hospitality scene. Its focus on curated tequila and mezcal programming, paired with a vinyl-driven music atmosphere, creates a culturally rich and intentional experience for guests. Black Sheep DSM stands out as a premier destination for cocktail enthusiasts and those seeking a welcoming yet sophisticated environment to enjoy expertly crafted drinks. The venue’s dedication to quality, ambiance, and specialized offerings contributes to its status as a leader in the regional bar community.

The role of Bar Manager at Black Sheep DSM is a pivotal position responsible for overseeing the operational management and daily business functions of the bar. This part-time position requires 30 to 37 hours of commitment weekly, primarily during evening and late-night shifts, including weekends and some holidays. The Bar Manager is entrusted with ensuring seamless operations in various critical areas such as inventory integrity, financial controls, staff scheduling, employee onboarding, vendor coordination, and maintaining high guest experience standards. Reporting directly to ownership, the Bar Manager exercises independent judgment across operational matters and actively participates in bartending duties alongside managerial responsibilities.

This position is ideal for an experienced professional who is passionate about beverage programs focused on agave spirits like tequila and mezcal, and who thrives in a dynamic, guest-focused environment. The Bar Manager is expected to lead by example, balancing hands-on bar service with managerial oversight. Key responsibilities include conducting regular physical inventory audits to manage stock levels and minimize waste, handling cash and financial reconciliation with accuracy, and developing efficient staff schedules to guarantee proper floor coverage during peak hours.

Further, the Bar Manager plays an essential role in team development, leading thorough onboarding and training processes for new and existing bar staff. This includes imparting deep product knowledge, especially about agave-based spirits, training on point-of-sale systems, and enforcing service standards with an emphasis on compliance and responsible alcohol service. The Bar Manager is also charged with maintaining the cleanliness and operational readiness of all bar areas, ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations, and proactive maintenance of bar equipment.

A strong emphasis is placed on delivering exceptional guest experiences. The Bar Manager must embody the hospitality values of Black Sheep DSM, offering warm and professional service while addressing guest concerns effectively. The position demands a high degree of professionalism, reliability, organizational skill, and interpersonal effectiveness. Compensation for this role ranges from $46,000 to $47,500 annually, inclusive of a base hourly rate, weekly management stipend, and weekly gratuity income based on historical averages. Additional benefits include an employee discount and paid training, supporting the ongoing development and satisfaction of team members.

Joining Black Sheep DSM means becoming part of a culturally engaged and quality-driven bar environment where operational leadership meets passionate hospitality. Candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting a resume and a cover letter highlighting their suitability for the role and social media presence. This opportunity offers a meaningful managerial platform within one of Des Moines' most celebrated cocktail lounges.
