Job Description
Changing Hands Bookstore is a well-established independent bookstore with a strong presence in Arizona since 1974. With two locations in Phoenix and Tempe, Changing Hands has cultivated a vibrant community hub that goes beyond books to offer diverse cultural and social experiences. The Phoenix location, in particular, houses First Draft Book Bar, a unique concept combining a wine and beer bar with a full coffee service and light small bites. Established in 2014, First Draft Book Bar has become an integral part of the changing landscape of retail bookstores, blending literary culture with a sophisticated beverage program and an inviting space for community events. The venue hosts a variety of events such as storytimes, trivia nights, author presentations, and social receptions, making it a dynamic environment that caters to a broad audience.
The Bar & Cafe Manager position at First Draft Book Bar is a full-time role requiring 40+ hours a week, including evenings and weekend shifts. This pivotal role is part of the management team and directly reports to the General Manager and CEO. The manager will work in close collaboration with both the bar and bookstore management teams to deliver seamless operations and exceptional customer experiences. The manager’s responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the bar, purchasing and maintaining inventory, managing staff, and ensuring all aspects of the bar run smoothly and profitably.
This role involves hands-on work alongside bartenders during service hours, hiring, training, and supporting staff to foster a positive and productive work environment. The manager will be responsible for budget management, including analyzing profit and loss reports and optimizing cost of goods sold (COGS), as well as scheduling to balance labor costs with operational needs. The position also entails maintaining bar equipment and point-of-sale systems, managing vendor relationships, and supporting events programming to integrate the bar with the local community through tastings, trivia, and educational initiatives.
The ideal candidate for the Bar & Cafe Manager role must bring a minimum of three years of bar management experience, a strong work ethic, and a passion for beverages – including wine, beer, coffee, and non-alcoholic options. Exceptional communication, customer service, and organizational skills are essential. The candidate should exhibit problem-solving ability, resilience, and adaptability to thrive in a dynamic retail and hospitality setting. Physical requirements include the capacity to lift up to 60 pounds and the stamina to stand for long periods. A willingness to be on call for coverage and to support colleagues as needed is also necessary.
The manager will be a community-oriented leader who values humility and curiosity, able to foster a happy workplace while driving profitability in a retail environment. Salary for this position starts at $40,000 and will be commensurate with experience. The benefits package includes paid time off, health insurance, and employee discounts. This is a unique opportunity to manage a distinctive beverage program in a community-focused bookstore that combines hospitality, retail, and culture in one of Phoenix’s most beloved local institutions.
