Job Description
The Salvation Army is a globally recognized organization dedicated to meeting human needs without discrimination and spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. As an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, The Salvation Army combines a spiritual mission with practical support services to communities. Established over a century ago, it has developed a vast network of social service programs, including disaster relief, rehabilitation centers, and community outreach initiatives. The organization places a strong emphasis on compassion, respect, and inclusivity, serving people from diverse backgrounds with dignity and care. With a commitment to integrity and service, The Salvation Army positively impacts countless lives across the United States and internationally, making it a highly respected name in charitable and humanitarian efforts.
This opportunity is for the position of Banquet Captain within the Events and Catering Department located at The Salvation Army facility in Salem, Oregon. This is a full-time, non-exempt role working 40 hours per week with an hourly wage of $22.44. The Banquet Captain plays a central role in supporting the kitchen and catering operations, working closely under the guidance of the Executive Chef/Food Services Director and Events and Catering Coordinator. The role requires both leadership and hands-on tasks, including supervising banquet and food services staff, scheduling shifts, timekeeping, and assisting with clerical duties such as data entry.
The position demands flexibility, overseeing banquet events, café operations, and food preparation while ensuring food safety and waste control. The Banquet Captain also helps recruit, train, and monitor staff members, ensuring all banquet event orders are followed precisely. They work diligently to provide excellent customer service, coordinate event setups and teardowns, and maintain cleanliness in both front and back-of-house areas. Physical stamina is essential since the job involves standing, lifting, carrying, and occasional climbing.
A strong ability to communicate effectively in English, lead teams, multitask, and solve problems is required. Proficiency with commercial kitchen equipment and adherence to standard operating procedures for preparing and serving food are critical. The role requires a valid Oregon driver's license due to occasional off-site food and supply deliveries. Ideal candidates will hold a current Food Handlers/SERV Safe card and possess at least one year of experience in food services, with supervisory experience preferred.
This role requires an individual who can maintain professionalism and composure in interactions with diverse and sometimes challenging customers. The successful candidate must also be able to work flexible hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. The Salvation Army provides accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act upon request, emphasizing their commitment to an inclusive and supportive workplace.
Overall, this is a dynamic role for those passionate about both food service and leadership within a mission-driven organization dedicated to community service and support.
