The position of Baking Faculty at the Culinary Institute of America entails a vital role in shaping the baking and pastry arts program. The ideal candidate will be responsible for preparing and delivering effective lesson plans, guiding students through their courses, and evaluating their progress in accordance with the CIA’s educational standards and policies. This role goes beyond classroom instruction, requiring the faculty member to actively participate in the assessment of student development and curriculum enhancement to align with both departmental and institutional goals. Faculty members are also expected to provide professional mentoring, offer career advice, maintain office hours, and support students needing additional help.

The role involves managing the kitchen, bakeshop, pastry shop, and classroom equipment and facilities, ensuring that all operations comply with industry and safety standards. Teaching quality food production within budget constraints is essential along with enforcing sanitation rules, professional conduct, and the Institute’s attendance and uniform policies. Additionally, baking faculty must stay current with evolving trends in the foodservice and hospitality industries through ongoing professional development and contribute to the Institute by serving on committees, helping with campus visitors, and engaging in various institutional activities.

This position offers a competitive starting salary of $75,000 for lecturing instructors, with potential for higher pay depending on the candidate's academic qualifications and professional experience. Job Requirements

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in Baking and Pastry or Culinary Arts
  • Minimum eight years' managerial experience in Food Service/Hospitality industry with focus on baking and pastry
  • Minimum three years supervisory experience
  • Prior baking/pastry production and training experience
  • Ability to lift fifty pounds frequently
  • Ability to stand extended periods in kitchen environment
  • Ability to perform hands-on demonstrations of baking and pastry techniques
  • Availability to work various shifts including early and late hours
  • Ability to be exposed to cleaning agents and chemicals related to food safety and sanitation

Job Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent in Baking and Pastry or Culinary Arts, or record of significant professional accomplishments
  • Minimum eight years of experience including managerial duties in food service/hospitality industry with focus on baking and pastry
  • Minimum three years of supervisory experience
  • Baking/pastry production and prior training experience required
  • Previous instructional experience preferred with a record of academic experience and scholarship
  • Bachelor's degree or higher preferred
  • Advanced professional certification such as CEPC, CMPC, CMB, or ProChef preferred
  • Certified Higher Educational Professional (CHEP) or equivalent preferred
  • ServSafe certification preferred
  • High skill level in artisan baking
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to identify learning outcomes and develop plans to achieve them
  • Strong teamwork, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to incorporate industry trends into curriculum
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and educational technology software

Job Duties

  • Prepare and execute daily lesson plans and teach classes consistent with CIA philosophy and policies
  • Participate in the assessment of students’ educational development and goals
  • Work individually with students needing extra help or career guidance
  • Provide timely and objective feedback to students and evaluate performance
  • Prepare, review, and revise course guides, syllabi, and curriculum materials
  • Conduct instruction and food preparation within budgetary limits
  • Teach assigned courses and follow scheduled times
  • Supervise students in preparing quality food following Institute guidelines
  • Enforce sanitation, attendance, professionalism, uniform, and hygiene policies
  • Take responsibility for kitchen, bakeshop, pastry shop, and classroom equipment and facilities
  • Stay current with foodservice and hospitality industry developments and plan annual professional development
  • Contribute to CIA growth by serving on committees, assisting visitors, recommending students and employees, and displaying hospitality
  • Perform other duties as assigned
