The Grocery Clerk (Bakery/Deli) position is an important customer-facing role responsible for creating an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service and product knowledge. The role involves preparing items according to customer requests using proper bakery equipment, offering product samples, and informing customers of bakery and deli specials. The Grocery Clerk ensures customers receive fresh products in the correct portions to prevent waste and shrinkage. They play a key role in helping customers discover new items by recommending deli or bakery products that meet their needs. This role requires proficiency in using various kitchen appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, slicers, ovens, and scales, and following food safety regulations and cooking instructions rigorously.

The Grocery Clerk also supports the department manager by assisting in reaching sales and profit goals and maintaining quality assurance standards. They contribute to a safe work environment by complying with safety procedures, identifying unsafe conditions, and practicing preventive maintenance by inspecting equipment regularly. This position demands a good understanding of the store layout to assist customers effectively and staying informed about current, future, seasonal, and special promotions to provide timely information to shoppers. Additionally, the Grocery Clerk is responsible for inventory management tasks such as labeling, stock replenishment, checking product quality, and reporting discrepancies to the department manager.

Job Duties

  • report product ordering and shipping discrepancies
  • understand store layout and locate products for customers
  • stay current with seasonal and special ads
  • maintain knowledge of products sold and respond to customer inquiries
  • monitor inventory and note discrepancies
  • ensure proper temperatures in cases and maintain temperature logs
