This particular role is based at SpartanNash's location at 279 W Water St, Oak Harbor, Ohio. The position involves leading the day-to-day operations of a retail store department. The department manager plays a critical leadership role, ensuring that the team is fully staffed, properly trained, and working in alignment with company standards. The role is essential in driving key performance indicators and meeting company goals related to inventory, product quality, customer service, and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities include managing inventory control procedures to maintain product freshness and quality, validating orders for accuracy and condition, and overseeing product storage. The department manager also leads a team responsible for stocking, production, and maintaining product standards, including the handling of spoiled or damaged items. Familiarity with all department and store products is necessary, along with knowledge of sales programs, promotions, and coupons to support revenue generation.

Operational duties extend to scheduling, labor and overtime control, and payroll expense management for the department. The manager implements company policies, participates in meetings at various levels, and ensures the department is clean, well-stocked, and adheres to food safety and quality guidelines. The role also involves setting and monitoring department goals and forecasts, with flexibility to take on additional responsibilities as needed.

Job Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
  • Two years of retail experience preferred
  • One-year supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication and bookkeeping skills
  • Good organization, prioritization, decision-making, problem solving, and conflict management skills
  • Strong leadership abilities capable of working in a hands-on environment
  • Good strategic planning and business acumen skills
  • Good knowledge of retail store operations and retail management systems
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish depending on location
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, and turn frequently
  • Capable of working in varied temperatures and outside weather conditions
  • Ability to manage noise levels in the work environment
  • Travel as required by assignment

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Order and maintain inventory in the department utilizing inventory control procedures to ensure product freshness and quality
  • Review and validate received orders for amount, quality, count or weight, condition, and ensure all product is stored appropriately
  • Manage a team completing all stocking, production, and tasks to ensure product quality, production planning, accuracy, and date-sensitive rotation
  • Handle spoiled or damaged products as per established guidelines
  • Maintain familiarity with all products carried in the department and store
  • Know advertised items, special prices, coupon deals, and store sales and rewards programs
  • Communicate and execute weekly and period Flight Plans according to company expectations and timelines
  • Manage scheduling, labor control, overtime control, and payroll expense for the department
  • Implement Our Winning Recipe and model core values and competencies
  • Manage department staffing, training, performance, and career development
  • Develop and monitor department goals and forecasts
  • Attend and participate in daily huddles, manager meetings, and district and company level meetings
  • Maintain a clean, attractive, and well-stocked department using structure of the day guidelines and Prime Time standards
  • Ensure all food and safety guidelines are followed and take immediate corrective action when necessary
  • Develop and implement plans to meet company goals and key performance indicators
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned
