The Bakery Cake Designer position at Hy-Vee is a vital role within the Bakery Department, offering an hourly wage ranging from $14.00 to $17.50 depending on experience. This non-exempt role is dedicated to decorating bakery items and assisting customers with their orders both over the phone and in person. The candidate will be expected to keep current on new cake designs and decorating trends, demonstrating creativity and attention to detail in all bakery items. Job Requirements

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of related work experience
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally with team lifting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently
  • Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to adhere to sanitation and safety standards
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Must be punctual and reliable
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems using judgment and interpretation
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Competency in filing, posting, mailing materials and basic communication
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to follow instructions

Job Duties

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
  • Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
  • Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing products out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, performing other tasks to enhance shopping experience
  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service including taking product orders
  • Takes customer orders at Bakery counter
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
  • Checks orders for the day and sets up timeline and production schedule
  • Decorates bakery items in a timely manner
  • Keeps current on new designs and trends
  • Ensures department standards are met
  • Checks cake orders for details daily and indicates supply needs
  • Orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order
  • Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site
  • Communicates with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs daily
  • Checks product dates and lists items to fill or replace
  • Develops bakery orders for bakers daily
  • Tracks daily retail production and identifies tasks
  • Operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees and participates in employee cross training
  • Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures workspace cleanliness
  • Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time
  • Wraps all product as necessary
  • Assists in other areas of the store as needed
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required
