The role of Bakery Cake Designer at Hy-Vee is a non-exempt position within the Bakery Department. It is a key customer-facing position responsible for decorating bakery products with artistic skill and precision while maintaining exceptional levels of service and professionalism. The individual in this role will take customer orders in person and over the phone, helping clients customize cakes to their exact preferences. This includes meeting detailed specifications about size, decoration, icing types, and timelines for special occasions such as weddings or celebrations. Beyond decorating cakes, the Bakery Cake Designer will take an active role in managing daily production schedules, tracking orders, and ordering necessary supplies to ensure smooth operations within the bakery.
The position demands a creative individual who stays updated with emerging cake decorating trends and is able to deliver timely, visually appealing products that delight customers. Working in collaboration with bakery managers and fellow team members, the candidate will help ensure the bakery department meets company standards, maintains cleanliness, and operates efficiently. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to solve practical problems
- Ability to do arithmetic calculations
- Ability to file, post, and mail materials
- Ability to copy data from one record to another
- Ability to interview to obtain basic information
- Ability to guide people and provide basic direction
- Must be physically able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally with team lifting
- Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and up to 10 pounds constantly
- Must be able to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Must have vision requirements including near and distance vision with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision
- Will work in store environment exposed to flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, residual fumes, and temperature extremes
- Must adhere to proper sanitation procedures and company policies

Job Duties
- Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
- Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, and performing other tasks to enhance the shopping experience
- Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders
- Takes customer orders at Bakery counter
- Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
- Decorates bakery items in a timely manner
- Keeps current on new designs and trends
- Ensures department standards are met
- Checks cake orders for details such as size, deco pack, icing needs, dates daily and indicates supply needs
- Orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order
- Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes on site outside the store
- Communicates with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs on a daily basis
- Checks product dates, pulls cases for work and lists items to fill or replace
- Develops bakery orders for bakers on a daily basis
- Tracks daily retail production and identifies tasks to be completed
- Operates as a lead worker with part-time or other employees by instructing and reviewing work
- Participates in employee cross training
- Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures and ensures the work area is always clean and neat
- Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
- Reports to work when scheduled and on time
