The Bakery Cake Designer is responsible for decorating bakery items, offering assistance to customers both in-person and over the phone, and ensuring the store’s bakery section maintains high standards of quality and presentation. This role requires a blend of artistic skill and operational efficiency as the designer works closely with customers to understand and execute their bakery needs, including special orders such as wedding cakes. The position demands a strong customer-focused attitude, with the designer frequently engaging customers with friendly greetings, learning their names, and providing personalized service that enhances their shopping experience.

In addition to customer interaction, the Bakery Cake Designer also takes on leadership responsibilities within the bakery by organizing daily orders, coordinating with bakers and other team members, and managing the decorating schedule to meet production timelines. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and adhere to sanitation standards
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities
  • Physical ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly
  • Ability to perform physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Willingness to work in conditions involving exposure to flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, residual fumes, and temperature extremes
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen is required

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to interview to obtain basic information
  • Ability to guide people and provide basic direction

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Make an effort to learn customers' names and address them by name
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach products, loading or unloading heavy items and enhancing the shopping experience
  • Answer the telephone promptly and take product orders
  • Take customer orders at the bakery counter
  • Work with coworkers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Check orders for the day and set up a timeline and production schedule
  • Decorate bakery items in a timely manner
  • Keep current on new designs and trends
  • Ensure department standards are met
  • Check cake orders for details and indicate supply needs
  • Order supplies for decorating area and check off the order
  • Deliver product and set up wedding cakes on site
  • Communicate with bakery manager regarding displays, weekly ads and special needs daily
  • Check product dates and list items to fill or replace
  • Develop bakery orders for bakers daily
  • Track daily retail production and identify tasks to be completed
  • Operate as a lead worker with part-time or other employees
  • Participate in employee cross training
  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and keep work area clean
  • Adhere to company policies and store guidelines
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time
