The Bakery Cake Designer at Hy-Vee plays an essential role within the Bakery Department, directly contributing to the customer experience by creating beautifully decorated bakery items. This non-exempt position is primarily responsible for designing and decorating cakes and other bakery products while providing exceptional customer service both in person and over the phone. The role requires close collaboration with bakery managers, co-workers, and customers to meet order specifications, maintain quality standards, and ensure timely production schedules. The Bakery Cake Designer acts as a lead worker at times, helping to instruct and review the activities of part-time employees, ensuring smooth daily operations.
In this role, the employee is expected to greet customers warmly, learn their names, and assist them in finding products or placing special orders. The designer must stay current on new decorating trends and maintain a clean and sanitary work environment in accordance with company policies and health standards. There is also responsibility for managing inventory by ordering supplies and tracking production metrics. The position demands physical abilities to handle lifting, balancing, and repetitive motions associated with bakery production. Working hours are typically within a store environment where employees face the challenge of meeting deadlines amidst multitasking and handling different priorities. Job Requirements
- Must be 18 or older
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of related work experience
- Ability to exert physical force up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently
- Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen
- Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities
- Ability to maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the work area
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Ability to file, post, copy data, and provide basic guidance
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Strong customer service orientation
Job Duties
- Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store
- Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store
- Makes an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible
- Assists customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach products, loading or unloading heavy items, and performing other tasks to enhance shopping experience
- Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service including taking product orders
- Takes customer orders at bakery counter
- Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Checks orders for the day and sets up a timeline and production schedule
- Decorates bakery items in a timely manner
- Keeps current on new designs and trends
- Ensures department standards are met
- Checks cake orders for details like size, deco pack, icing needs, dates
- Orders supplies for decorating area and checks off the order
- Delivers product and sets up wedding cakes off-site
- Communicates with bakery manager daily regarding displays, weekly ads, and special needs
- Checks product dates, pulls cases for work and lists items to fill or replace
- Develops bakery orders for bakers daily
- Tracks daily retail production and identifies tasks
- Operates as a lead worker with part-time employees by instructing and reviewing work
- Participates in employee cross training
- Understands and practices proper sanitation procedures
- Adheres to company policies and individual store guidelines
- Reports to work on time when scheduled
