The position of Bakery Cake Designer at Hy-Vee is a non-exempt role within the bakery department that centers on decorating bakery items and providing exceptional customer service. The Bakery Cake Designer plays a crucial part in the customer’s overall bakery shopping experience by assisting customers both over the phone and in-person at the bakery counter. This role requires a creative individual with attention to detail to decorate cakes and other baked goods following specific customer requests and current design trends. The position demands effective communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to meet production timelines. The Bakery Cake Designer sets up production schedules, checks orders for accuracy, and coordinates supply needs. They also lead part-time staff when needed and ensure that sanitation and safety standards are strictly followed.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to solve practical problems involving a variety of variables with limited standardization
- Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages
- Ability to file, post and mail materials
- Ability to guide people and provide basic direction
- Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly
- Visual requirements including close and distant vision with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities
- Adherence to company policies and individual store guidelines
- Willingness to report to work on time

Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service exhibiting caring, concern and patience
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner regardless of location within the store
- Learn customers’ names and address them by name when possible
- Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing products out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, and enhancing their shopping experience
- Answer telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service including taking product orders
- Take customer orders at bakery counter
- Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Check daily orders and set up production schedule and timeline
- Decorate bakery items in a timely manner
- Keep current on new designs and trends
- Ensure department standards are met
- Check cake orders for details and indicate supply needs
- Order supplies for decorating area and verify order accuracy
- Deliver and set up wedding cakes on site
- Communicate with bakery manager regarding displays, ads and special needs
- Check product dates and list items to fill or replace
- Develop bakery orders daily for bakers
- Track daily retail production and identify tasks to be completed
- Operate as a lead worker instructing and reviewing work of part-time employees
- Participate in employee cross training
- Practice proper sanitation procedures and maintain clean work area
- Adhere to company policies and store guidelines
- Report to work on time as scheduled
- Wrap products as necessary
- Assist other store areas as needed
- Perform other job related duties and special projects as required
