The Bakery Cake Designer position at Hy-Vee is a crucial role within the bakery department, designed for an individual passionate about creative cake decorating and customer interaction. This position is non-exempt and primarily responsible for decorating bakery items with precision and artistry. The role involves assisting customers both in person and over the phone with their bakery orders, ensuring that each interaction is friendly, efficient, and meets Hy-Vee’s high standards of customer care. A Bakery Cake Designer develops and executes cake designs and decorations according to customer specifications while staying current on the latest decorating trends and techniques.
In addition to direct customer service, the Bakery Cake Designer collaborates closely with team members and bakery management to coordinate production schedules, order supplies, and maintain department cleanliness and sanitation standards. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail environment. Responsibilities include greeting customers warmly, taking detailed cake orders, preparing and decorating cake products, setting up wedding cakes on-site, and supporting overall bakery operations to ensure a smooth and pleasant shopping experience for customers.

Job Requirements
- High school or equivalent experience
- Six months or less of similar or related work experience
- Ability to exert physical force up to 100 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently
- Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
- Ability to see with or without correction at various distances including color vision and depth perception
- Ability to follow instructions and solve practical problems
- Willingness to participate in cross-training
- Commitment to punctuality and adherence to company policies
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent

Job Duties
- Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience
- Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
- Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, and loading or unloading heavy items
- Answer the telephone promptly and take product orders
- Take customer orders at Bakery counter
- Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment
- Decorate bakery items in a timely manner and keep current on new designs and trends
- Ensure department standards are met
- Check cake orders for details and indicate supply needs
- Order supplies for decorating area
- Deliver and set up wedding cakes on site
- Communicate with bakery manager regarding displays, ads and special needs
- Check product dates and list items to fill or replace
- Develop bakery orders for bakers daily
- Track daily retail production and identify tasks
- Operate as a lead worker and instruct part-time or other employees
- Participate in employee cross-training
- Practice proper sanitation procedures and ensure work area is clean
- Adhere to company policies and store guidelines
- Report to work on time when scheduled
