The Bakery Cake Designer position at Hy-Vee offers a unique opportunity for creative individuals who are passionate about baking and decorating. This non-exempt role is housed within the bakery department, where the primary responsibility is to decorate bakery items with artistic flair and precision. Daily duties include greeting customers warmly, taking and managing orders, decorating bakery items efficiently, keeping up with current cake design trends, and ensuring bakery department standards are met at all times. The individual also manages supply orders, coordinates cake production schedules, and occasionally delivers and sets up wedding cakes outside the store. Attention to detail is critical, especially when checking cake orders for specifications like size, icing, and decoration packaging. Team collaboration is also emphasized to maintain a pleasant and productive work environment.

This role requires practical problem-solving skills, the ability to conduct arithmetic calculations involving fractions and percentages, and the capability to manage several tasks simultaneously under deadline pressure. Physical demands include lifting weights, climbing, bending, and other activities necessary in a bakery setting. The working conditions often include exposure to flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, and temperature fluctuations typical of bakery environments.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Six months or less of similar or related work experience
  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and 10 pounds constantly
  • Ability to perform physical activities including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions
  • Visual requirements including vision from less than 20 inches and more than 20 feet with or without correction, color vision, depth perception and field of vision
  • Ability to work under significant pressure and meet multiple priorities
  • Willingness to comply with company policies and complete pre-employment drug screening

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Learn customers' names and address them by name whenever possible
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, loading or unloading heavy items, and enhancing their shopping experience
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide helpful service including taking product orders
  • Take customer orders at the bakery counter
  • Work with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and pleasant work environment
  • Check orders daily and establish production schedules
  • Decorate bakery items in a timely manner
  • Keep current on new designs and trends
  • Ensure department standards are met
  • Check cake orders for details and indicate supply needs
  • Order supplies and manage inventory
  • Deliver and set up wedding cakes on site
  • Communicate with bakery manager regarding displays, ads, and special needs
  • Check product dates and manage stock
  • Develop bakery orders for bakers
  • Track daily retail production and identify tasks
  • Operate as lead worker instructing part-time employees
  • Participate in employee cross training
  • Practice proper sanitation and cleanliness
  • Adhere to company policies and store guidelines
